Uprating the MGW of the car?

Does anyone know.....Is it possible to have the MGW of the car uprated to over 3500kg, to make it possible to tow longer trailers/caravans?

I know the armoured cars have it done and presumably there is modification to the subframes to make it possible. Fifth wheel companies up rate pickups so they can tow the american style rigs...... Why not be able to uprate the rangie to tow big hobby caravans and the new bailey retreats.....

(bit caravanny i know stan but more technical i thought so posted here) There is nothing that can't be fixed with a hammer😜😜

I read somewhere the FFRR is rated to tow up to 4 tonnes with coupled brakes.

I am sure the MGW is based on braking capacity rather than the strength of the sub-frames as you would still only have 75kg on the tow ball. 56 TDV8 Vogue SE

mmmm . . . . interesting

I reckon your enemy will be Type Approval. The Armoured vehicles will be Type Approved at the higher weight from new, and because it's a car, will not be do - able retrospectively. The pick ups you mention are commercial vehicles and come under different rules.

Best bet is to ring VOSA - Raynesway at Derby is your nearest VTS - they have Technical Officers who know the answer to this kind of stuff. If you get nowhere, PM me - I've some VOSA contacts -

Thumbs Up Where do you go after one of these . . . ?

Its less about the weight and more about the length. In the uk the max allowable length is 7m excl drawbar, unless the towing vehicle has a mgw of 3500kg or more. Over 3500kg the max length is not applicable so long trailers and caravans over 7m can be towed..... There is nothing that can't be fixed with a hammer😜😜

i have asked my dad and he said that you need to get in touch with the manufacture and ask if there is anything can be done to up rate the vehicle to tow greater than 3500kg he said VOSA would only look at documentation from the manufacture before they will go any further with approving it. He will double check this tomorrow at the testing station when he goes to work.
