Funny that it's covered exactly the same distance. |

Maybe irrelevant but do you think 4500 miles in a year could be a factor ? |

I don't have the tdv8, BUT I sometimes get a silent no start, no click, and I sometimes thump the selector shaft a little and it then fires, maybe your selector shaft (gearstick) is not correctly 'perking', thus signalling the starter to not energise.... or 'go' ? |

Had a similar problem when I had my RRS SC. Quick tap with a hammer on the casing and it turned over straight away. Was fine afterwards and never had a problem again Tony

We have a 2003 4.4 V8 (BMW Engine) and the starter motor failed last year. As far as we know it was on its original starter so it would have failed at around 100K |

David you have too many cars. I will happily put the mileage up on your TDV8 for you. |

Interestingly I had an intermittent starter problem and it was the lead from the battery to the starter had internal corrosion so it had obviously been left lying around for ages before use the thing was it looked brand new but wasn't till I shoved a meter over it and got some wacky readings that I found the issue |

My old 2010 L322 needed a new starter at 30000 miles / 3.5 years. Intermittant starting was the symptom. Definite weak spot. |

As per @PaulTyrer, I am on 118K with original starter motor, maybe they changed spec or extra gizmos are killing them? Food for thought |

as per youtube, starter motors explained, you have the pre-engaged type. looking at your motor assembly, the smaller barrel shaped item, on the starter is the solenoid, this can get a high resistance across it, therefore it is clicking 'in' and not transferring high current to the motor, ie the action is engaging, but not powering the bigger barrel, the motor. and no start. if you are handy, you can dismantle the solenoid and file the contacts clean. you can test the motor first with a positive jump lead DIRECT to the motor terminal. it will spark and make you jump though. this will only spin the motor freely, not turn engine. remember the solenoid will 'engage' this on it's 'action'.

If it were any of the other cars I'd have it off, strip it, clean it and rebuild it but that's what the warranty is for on this one |
