knocky suspension?

Ok, i now have a knock on the front suspension, and no its not suncream rattling around in the door pocket.

When i get matey boy to rock the steering whilst im under the car it feels to the touch like it is coming from the rack area and is strongest around the gaiter area on the drivers side i had a search and thus had deduced it may be the inner track rod end, however after a late evening fiddling with the ff's underneaths, i have found that there is some play in the ARB drop link upper bushing on the drivers side and when wiggled it gives the sort of knocking that i have felt....

Would that however give a knock through the steering rack when rocked? I havent got the helper monkey to rock the steering at present so i can trace if it is that part.

More investigation required....... There is nothing that can't be fixed with a hammer😜😜

Change the droplinks my car is the same age as yours and the bushes on the droplinks were perishing these tend to make a knocking noise when going or gone that was at about 72K miles. Change for genuine if you can not expensive so worth doing anyway as tighten up car. Literally 10 mins a side . Rears longer due to access being tight but easly doable.

Another culprit is the lower balljoint, Present :2008 TDV8 HSE

Mine had exactly the same.
Changed steering rod inners and outers as there were split gaters and worn joints anyway - no difference.
Changed drop links (10 minute job without taking wheels off) - knock gone.

Lower ball joints look tight, no evident movement, so arb links first.

Should be warranty job but for less than 100 sheets its not really worth the hassle.

If it doent sort it then it will go for the track rod ends to he looked at There is nothing that can't be fixed with a hammer😜😜

Had a knock on the front of my VSE replaced both lower ball joints with delphi units as there was visible movement on the driver side.

Knock changed to a dull thud (had already noticed the driver sdie ARB links had burst boots). Replaced both ARB links with delphi units. All now smooth and silent 56 TDV8 Vogue SE

Hokey day, garage reckon the same.

Track rod end and arb drop link. They are going to put the claim in to the warranty co and let me know when it can go in.

It is also awaiting the results of a trip to chartwells to try and get a new tailgate under warranty! Before it expires. Hopefully it should go through on both counts and the old gal can have some new bits on her this year as so far (touch wood) ahe has bee reliable to a tee (bar the rear caliper failure) There is nothing that can't be fixed with a hammer😜😜

Ok.

Warranty provider will not pay out, Censored ,for the track rod or arb links so i have sourced and fitted a set of the links and booked it in for the track rod.

Most of the knock has now gone, but there is still a slight knock on the rack so me thinks the track rod will deffo need attending to.

I got lemforder arb links from ecp and they are EXACTLY the same as those which came off, down to the markings on the rubber gaiters. So can only assume that they were the oem for when mine was built.

I took a few pics of the process.

It is possible to change them in about 20 mins with the car on flat ground. It is not neccessary to remove the wheels or jack the car up. Just put it in off road height.

Will post pics when my tech starts behaving...... Big Cry There is nothing that can't be fixed with a hammer😜😜
