Lower Tail gate wont close

Up till Sunday my lower tail gate has been closing fine, yet on Sunday it failed to close shut, I have found a cure by lifting the plastic flap, just above the latch.

My question is why has it just stopped working, is there some thing ive missed

Ive tried to attach a picture of a similar latch

Its the plastic bit to the right of the picture Three things in a blokes life his dog,his car and a Cornish pasty, nothing else matters.

Sounds like a problem with the actuator that runs the latch. The plastic tab is like a manual override.
My right latch packed up so i ordered a latch and actuator off ebay for £30. Takes about 10mins to fit.

Could just be that the latch is "gunged up".
Take off latch - just a couple of screws/bolts - then lock and open (with key fob or dash switch) to check if actuator is operating.
If it is, then clean up latch using WD40 and light oil (3 in I) and manually open and close latch (including most importantly the plastic bit )whilst cleaning until action becomes free and easy.
Screw latch back onto actuator and hopefully job's done.
Happened to me last year - and I was very pleased with a "free fix" for the Rangie.!!
Hope this helps.

Tim

Thanks TimP and Paul271, had a look on eBay and have seen what you mean, as I need to take it out to check the numbers I'll have a go at cleaning as you've suggested first and if that fails, I can order another

Thanks again

Paul there's one on eBay for £25, buts its for a 2006, so i'll have to take it out to check to see if its the same number.

Mine will most likely be knackered too. Three things in a blokes life his dog,his car and a Cornish pasty, nothing else matters.

£31.45 for a left or right on eBay and that includes the actuator.
I think they're the same in the later models definitely worth double checking though.

Again other forum members have saved me some money, took both latches off, cleaned and re oiled, Both working fine.

Just be careful when removing the latch, I found that due to the crud, when I pulled the latch away from the body the top spindle in the actuator fell out. Its only a push fit back in and retightening of a spring. But involves removing the door top trim and door card.

Thanks again Paul271 and TimP Three things in a blokes life his dog,his car and a Cornish pasty, nothing else matters.
