The sand was quite soft so I made sure I stayed away well away from the waters edge.

I'd suggest very gentle driving too. Give it a load of power and the wheels need to spin and start to dig in a bit before the electronics try to save you. Better to think first and pull away as slowly as possible so as not to break up the sand under you. Once you break through the harder surface it's all to easy to get stuck.

x2,we go on a lot of sites with trucks,so if im parked up getting loaded on soft ground when i come to set off i reverse about 2 feet then select low gear & set off on tickover & 9 times out of 10 you never get stuck Wink

V8. always here to entertain,,,,lol.

Thanks Fox for your advice.

Perhaps FFRR isn't suited to sand afterall as Chris Saul wrote in his blog ('0Cool:

Well I think he is right in the way he has reported.

The Jeep would be better, just like a Defender 90 would. Or any lighter 4x4 with lower ground pressure.
A 90 is 1000kg(ish) less than a FFRR and many people run 265/75R16 All-Terrains that go on desert trips I've seen. Much less weight and wider tyres will always be better in sand than a bit of electronic trickery. Particularly as a 265/75R16 can be aired down giving a noticably bigger footprint. Where a low profile FFRR tyre does not deform so much under low pressure you probably have something approaching 50% to 100% more pressure per square cm on the sand in the FFRR.

Maybe you can get a set of smaller alloys (R18?) for your FFRR to help as you'll need more sidewall to get the bigger footprint when you deflate the tyres?
Unless it has big brakes, in which case I can't see an option.
