Stuck in the sand!

Decided to see how the FFRR performs in sand, I decided to attempt to drive along the beach this afternoon. The sand was quite soft so I made sure I stayed away well away from the waters edge.

(My car is a '06 - no Terrain Response knob in my car.)

I put the gear lever to 'D' and stepped on the accelerator and headed onto the sand. I did not get very far before the car started to 'crab' and I felt the car was sinking into the sand. No matter how hard I stepped on the gas, (both the front and rear wheels were turning) I was not getting any traction! the RPM was climbing but the car just inched forwards.

I continued to put my pedal to the metal for 10 mins. A message started to come on saying something about a fault had occured and only certain gears are working. Also, when I shifted the gear knob down, ie: from P to R to N to D, on my display in the instrument cluster showed 'P" only.(when the display should have shown the gear it was in P/R/N or D.)

I tried to continue ahead so I stepped on the accelerator pedal, the RPMs climbed but the tyres no longer rotated forwards. I was going no where!

I decided to try reversing but soon, that wasn't going anywhere too! Big Cry

I had to call for help and a chap with a '92 Mitsubishi Pajero came to drag the sticken FFRR to terra firma. Embarassed

What did I do wrong? I would have thought the FFRR could have easily crossed the sand on the beach! '01 1.8i Freelander. Grey/ grey

SC standard 20' Continentals.

FFRR has permanent 4WD so i assume that when in sand, there is no need to change diffentials? '01 1.8i Freelander. Grey/ grey

I've been plenty of times in the sand, never got stuck once! Although, I was riding on 19's with Good Year Wrangler HP tires! But I also think it depends how you drive! mercuryf1 said he put his pedal to the metal, so I guess this doesn't help! Rolling Eyes

P.S. @ V8 andy: stop complaining about the FFRR in other forums Evil or Very Mad or leave... Whistle Btw, the guy seems to be in Malaysia, so the uk offroad courses don't seem to help him! 2000 BMW M5, Avus Blue/LeMans Leather Interior

Although the sea salt may not be good for the car, the sand is harder nearer the water as the water makes it more dense.

When I was driving in Morocco the sand was quite soft, but once I got my disco closer to the sea it was like driving on a road as long as you didn't make wild steering inputs.

I'd suggest very gentle driving too. Give it a load of power and the wheels need to spin and start to dig in a bit before the electronics try to save you. Better to think first and pull away as slowly as possible so as not to break up the sand under you. Once you break through the harder surface it's all to easy to get stuck.
