Sadly not, I'm in the process now of trying to get a decent chap to fit me a recon box. Just asking round for prices at the moment and when they can do it. If you guys can recommend anyone in the West Midlands area?

The strange thing is it seems fine in manual mode. It only plays up in auto between gears 3-4 there a fault stored in it saying shift problem gear 3-4 as well I've tried clearing this but it doesn't help.

Is this something he can fix? I suppose it's just the logistics of getting the gearbox up to him. The difference between theory and reality is that in theory it will work.

I've pm'ed RRPhil in the hope he may know where the problem lies or confirm it needs a recon gearbox. I have spoke to another member who has pointed me in the direction of it could be a mechatronics unit fault.

This is crazy, have the LR garage confirmed it is a mechanical fault as opposed to a software one? If not mechanical then it must be fixable somehow?

Is it worth seeing if your box can relearn over time, got to be better than shelling out for a recon box? - nothing to lose?

I had a similar sort of problem on my Audi, took a couple of goes but by replacing the ECU that lived inside the gearbox sorted it out. (£400 ish plus oil change) .

I'd use it in manual for while and see if it eventually 'learns' how to behave or until such time as I want to get more info. about more economiacl fixes.

I would not be throwing money at it just yet if it was working okay before you reset it - there must be some way to reflash with software that will sort the issue out.

I've spoken to RRPhil and he has been more than helpful hopefully it's a shift solenoid between gears 3-4. The problem is not many garages will strip the box down they just want to replace the gearbox as one.

Will keep you guys updated. The difference between theory and reality is that in theory it will work.

I don't agree with the notion that when the adaptions are reset that the box goes back to 0000 miles mentality.

A common issue with these boxes is the harsh downshift shunting, known as LOT (Lift off throttle). Land Rover have issues LTB's about it, and there was one for mine, which I alerted my dealer to, as I was experiencing lumpy downshifts that I thought should have been smoother.

They re-flashed the gearbox ECU according to the LTB in question as it stated that the gearbox comes with a map that is suited to semi sand driving - I presume this is because most Supercharged cars head for the Gulf region, not the UK.

After the reset it was slightly improved but still not great. Last week they reset the adaptions and it seems to be MUCH smoother.

Also, on older cars you can always do a fluid and filter flush, or a Megaflush. Lots of divided opinion on here about if this is wise or not, some feel it causes issues, I had it done on my TVD8 at about 82K and it improved the smoothness of gearchanges, and is preventative maintenance at the same time. Land Rover states the ZF box is sealed for life but tells the Dealers to do a fluid change at 100K or 10yrs, but oddly the same box in a Jag is done at 60K. Go figure. Discovery 4 HSE

He knows everything there is to know regarding this problem.
Stop wasting time taking advice that you know wont work and have it seen to, its most likely the mechatronic that needs replacing.
These idd tools are ok but a little knowlegde is dangerous esp with the zf6hp26 transmision.

I think guys I'm going to get gearbox man to sort it. I was intrested in having a go myself but the more I learn this May end up costing more money as a specialist will hopefully be able to put his hand on the problem straight away.

I was going to invest in diagnostics in the new year but this has put me right off.
