unless you have documented proof i really cant see how you can claim that supermarkets supply 'near to sell by date' fuel and thats why its not as good as branded fuel...i would have thought that a small shell/bp etc garage in a village somewhere would have older fuel in its tanks because of a small customer base whereas supermarkets have a very large turnover so you always get fresh fuel.

all fuel must be supplied to british standards and is the same from branded suppliers and from supermarkets, the only difference is the additives and the fact that supermarkets sell at a smaller profit to entice you to their stores...branded suppliers charge more for their fuel and additives because of their convenient locations and that there will always be someone that buys from m&s rather than asda attitude..
if anyone thinks that theirs makes a difference then buy from them and line their already fat pockets...

for the majority of consumers , paying less for fuel does make a difference to the economics of running a car but if you can afford it and you think branded fuel is better then buy from the branded suppliers..

Stan I did not "claim" anything. I said "I guess" - I have only read/heard rumours that Supermarkets but the cheapest available which I suppose could be bottom of tank or nearly out of date who really knows. My actual point remains that the Premium suppliers use more additives than the supermarkets. Thumbs Up

I don't know about fuel processing etc. so will only comment on my personal experience....

In my old Fiat Coupe (petrol 20 valve turbo) I could feel the difference when using branded fuel compared to supermarket fuel.
Indeed, some branded fuel seemed better than others and I ended up always using Shell V Power.
When I sold the car it had done 120k miles and the engine pulled as strongly as it did when I purchased the vehicle at 20k miles.

In the RR (diesel) the difference is much less marked, however it seems to run smoother on branded fuel, start a bit easier and get 1-2mpg more.
However, I fill up when its convenient so probably run about 50:50 branded/supermarket and have never had any issues.

I also ran a can of BG244 through the system and believe that helped (thanks Gaz Thumbs Up ) 2007 Zermatt Silver TDV8 Vogue SE - now sold but was a great car!

I'm not buying your car as you've used supermarket fuel!

I've no clue as to whether Vpower Nitro+ is better than supermarket super unleaded or unleaded. I just use Vpower because, psychologically at least, it makes me feel I'm doing the best I can to feed it properly and for the sake of a difference in about £8 odd every week or two, it doesn't seem too big a deal, particularly "if" there is a long term benefit.

Does it perform better/ give better fuel economy? Fuel consumption no. Performance maybe a bit smoother but that could be me trying to convince myself!

Here's one:
Would you ask someone selling you a Range Rover whether they have run it on supermarket or branded fuel and if the answer was supermarket fuel, would you then not buy the car Question

Thumbs Up

if we are talking petrol rather than diesel ..... then us owners of classic cars need to be more careful over which fuel to use as these days standard unleaded & some super has very high content level of ethanol which can damage older rubber seals, fuel lines etc

I try & use Shell V-Power nitro unleaded in my classic cars as I know it has 5% or less ethanol content

I think Tesco 99 has quite high ethanol content ???

Always an emotive subject, this one . . . !
I'm stuck where I live with little choice of fuels & brands.
However, if I did have more choice, I'd put Shell in my fleet.

I have a relative who was a fuel scientist for Shell (now retired). After some pretty lengthy conversations with him, I'm convinced as to the additional lengths that his company went to prove the efficiency and safety of their additives. For example, they ran a fleet of varied vehicles through normal Joe Public usage using different fuels they had created. At prescribed intervals, the engine would be taken out and stripped before being examined by them and the manufacturer.

As I understand it, the real benefits come with prolonged use of these fuels - the odd tank now and then won't necessarily help.
I put £90 of Shell V Power not long ago in mine as I was passing a Shell garage. Why did I do it ? - so I could get the Ferrari Lego that came with it ! Laughing

Thumbs Up Where do you go after one of these . . . ?

Spoke with my mate who has a 57 plate TDV8 that has 197,000 miles on it. He said he nearly always fills up at our local morrisons, has never put any cleaner through it as he has not heard of them and also would not go out of his way anyway to put shell in?

I have also spoken to another mate who has a 58 plate passat which is a taxi and is coming up to 375,000 miles now, and again he has only ever put cheap fuel through it - mostly morrisons due to the points. He has only ever had pads discs and tyres and is still only on the second clutch. He put cleaner through it once about a year ago, but didn't think it was worth it, so its not had any since.

Make what you like of all that!
