Starter issue

I'm having an intermittent fault.

The car has always started faultlessly until a few weeks ago. Now about 30% of the time I get in, hit the button and "click". Nothing. Try again and it is the same lottery. However eventually it will always start. No hint that the problem ever existed.

It can start first time or it can take five or six attempts.

The garage is a bit flummoxed but thinks it is the starter motor - they have been advised that the main dealer has replaced a few recently.

It is worse when the car is cold but it doesn't seem directly correlated.

Any other ideas?
