Germany 2004 Range Rover HSE Td6 Zambezi Silver
upper windscreen trim

Hi,

I need to replace the rubber exterior upper windscreen finisher on my 2004 TD6 (was deteriorated at the jet carwash and I now have some water sitting under the screen).
Part is DCB500050PMD.

Has anyone done this before? How difficult is it and what should I know?

Thanks

Be careful with this piece of trim. You may need to remove the A Pillar trims to get a flush fit and the clips that hold these invariably snap in the process. I have had nightmares with windscreen trim following incompetent windscreen fitters who don't know what they're doing. Make sure it sits completely flush or you will be plagued with wind noise and vibrations!

Autobiography could you elaborate a little please. I recently had my screen cut out due to wind noise, sure enough the glass had parted company from the bonding glue however I still think the top of the screen suffers noise. Any ideas?

Technically speaking, the original trim should not have come out so easily. They're slotted onto the glass edge before the windscreen is fitted to the car; there is also a thin line of double sided tape inside the trim recess which helps keep it in place, preventing it from sliding left to right.

Correctly positioned, the trim should effectively be pinched between the glass edge and the rebate, leading up to the roof skin.

It's not an impossible task to fit the trim back in without removing the glass, but I would try by measuring and marking the centre of the trim (and top of the screen) and then slide the L+R ends in first, without taking the A pillar covers off. Then simply work on compressing the rest of the trim in the middle into place.

Do not use an excessive force and definitely no hard tools. If using a plastic filler spreader is not doing it, put the trim in a plastic bag, seal it, and immerse the bag in hot water for a while to soften the trim compound.

Thanks Glassman, looks like a hell of a job.

The trim didn't move, it was just a bit damaged, and now I have some mist between the screen and the trim.

Maybe I should just live with it and wait.

There should not be any bonding glue. I had this issue when the windscreen company tried to re-use broken trim clips by using glue. Correctly fitted, none of the windscreen trim should need any bonding. This includes top trim, a pillar covers and scuttle panel. Basically you need to watch them like a hawk to check they don't glue anything. Recently had a new windscreen fitted and I requested new trim clips etc from the outset. They are not reusable.

Nobody is suggesting he should use any type of glue, and you're absolutely right.

I maintain that he shouldn't have to take the A pillar covers off, ergo: no issues with clips, unless the screen is being removed in which case it should be done by a professional.
