For starters you need to check your gear selector is tight and well greased (this is under the car offside/right side gearbox). If all OK there lift the gear lever panel surround and check all is connected properly there. More likely to be mechanical than electronic, though you never know.....

In my old RR Classic I had the accelerator cable get stuck in the engine bay resulting in the car trying to drive off when my foot was on the brake but I think the L322 is now all electrical. I have never heard of a Range Rover gearbox changing from forward to reverse gear though. Tom

As Joe90 suggests, check the linkage on the side of the gearbox. Needs lubricating ?

Thanks for the tips! Especially on the cable. Will check this later on.

Definitely should not start in gear. Maybe when they did the rebuild the sensor or selector cog was not calibrated or connected back properly. Tom

I paid a visit to an indie in Tallinn. They did confirm that there is a problem (surprise!) but it can't be resolved with a diagnostic tool. Asked me to call back on Monday as they need to do some research. The problem is almost certainly in the electronics but can't say for sure.

You would have to by-pass the inhibitor switch in the sump

According to the garage in Tallinn, the problem appears to be located in the speedo/cluster/instrument binnacle. The garage was able to gather all sorts of data with the diagnostics from the speedo, except in which position the gear selector was. The correct engaged gear does light up in the cluster, but the speedo does not "understand" the position. So the gear indicator provides the info only for the driver. The diagnostics tool can read from the speedo, when the parking brake is engaged. There were no other problems. My own conclusion is that the reversing issue was most likely caused by the cable, but I will look at that later on.

The cluster is a VIN locked unit and can't (to my knowledge) be reprogrammed to another vehicle... So, your only choice would be a new unit if yours is un-repairable...
