Hi Everyone, i've had a look through the forum and i'm still a little bit concerned at the mo.
I've picked up our new car today,
4.4 Vogue 03/53 reg, with LPG. the difference between this and my old discovery is immense, so i'm hoping these next few thing are just quirks i need to get used to and not faults. i need someone with experience of FFRR to guide me as to whether these things are normal;
1) there's a slight buzzing / whirring sound coming from near the clock. its there when i open the car, before switching anything on.
2) there's an intermittent sound from the OSR which sounds like driving over rumble strips.
3) there's an intermittent vibration coming through the car, felt in the seats and steering wheel. this isnt present at the same time as the noise from the rear.

the car is under warranty for 3 months. it was MOT'd yesterday and passed with 3 advisories - both front tires worn on inner edges and a slightly cracked rear tyre. all these were done by the garage.

1. is a small fan to feed air to climate control sensor... Asked the same question with the same noise!

There is a post here (maybe even in the Wiki) about how to remove the climate control panel and cleaning the fan and sensor. Over the years the fan collects dust and that reduce the effectiveness of the cabin temp sensor and can cause the noise. I think Daveo did that post but not sure. Stan may be able to help as he is a super search guru on here (or he has an eidetic memory).

The other vibrations could be caused by external trim (bonnet and A-pillar are notorious for these issues) not being fastened properly or coming loose. So I would suggest to start searching there first before looking at more sinister things happening. Also underneath the car there are covers/wheelarch liners and the likes that could be loose and cause the noise/vibration. MY 2010 5.0 SC Galway green and sand interior!!
Have the Faultmate MSV2 Extreme to be tinkering with the settings etc. !!

When you say "all these were done by the garage" does that mean the tyres were replaced?
Anyway to answer your questions:

1) Buzzing whirring is the fan for the temperature sensor for the climate control, it's a normal thing on most cars although shouldn't be too noisy but is clearly audible when getting in the car. It tends to suck in dust which can make the noise worse.

2) & 3) Unbalanced wheels on the front (due to tyre wear) often give vibration through the steering wheel. Cattle grid/rumble strip like vibrations over 50-55mph can also indicate a worn out torque converter. It could also be worn suspension components/wheel bearings etc. but they should have been checked in the MOT, all depends on the inspector. If not done already by the garage and you are getting advisories on the MOT I would get the tyres changed and balanced and see if it improves.

Vibration felt through the seats is most likely to be rear wheel balancing.

If you're getting the rear tyres replaced, do as a pair, get them properly balanced. I've often taken mine back a couple of times to get the wheels re-balanced as they didn't do it right the first time. Discovery 4 HSE
