The problem is prevalent to a lot of modern cars due to the way OBD is mandated to work. There is no way to really secure it as otherwise generic code readers would become useless.

As stan thinks securing it so a certain code has to be entered is one way but they will only end up getting lost or locked in and still be held on a Manufacturers DB which would still give access to the crooks who get the keys anyway...

Really what needs doing is a physical cut or making it harder to get at.

I think there are a few critical cables to it that supply 12v and earth that could easily be switched via a hidden switch somewhere that would have the desired effect, or blanking it off and just pulling it through the dash to another location and leaving it loose but hidden... BMW's were suffering this fate awhile ago so maybe they are finding a way to disable the ultrasonic sensors or have a dead spot on them... FFRR MY06 facelift With TDV8 Alloys Zeros/ATR's

Makes life easy and all you need to do is stick an O2 simcard or Asda one in it with some credit and use it every now and again, but hide it in the boot somewhere tied into the 12v Accesory socket wiring in the boot.

The BMW OBD2 socket was rewired on a recall i believe and if you fitted a pre rectification mod code reader afterwards i believe it would go up in smoke!

Getting back to ebajema's very interesting comment, would our cars (322, 405) actually run okay with the orb2 disconnected or would it come up as a Immediate Service Required warning? Does anyone know?

They would drain the battery slowly at least on the l322 as the cover for the port shorts two pins iirc to stop it draining.

I like Will's idea and then put a big capacitor on the fake OBD2 port that immediately fries the gadget the thieves are using.  MY 2010 5.0 SC Galway green and sand interior!!
