Presumably your TD6 has had the front propshaft/differential upgrade?

What upgrade would that be and how would I know if my TD6 has had it done?

Hi.
Just had exactly the same problem as Swiftman Big Cry

Pull out from a junction, big bang/thud and no drive.
Got recovered to a Land Rover service centre, thinking it was the faulty front propshaft/differential only to be told its already had the upgrade to the new one.

The spline gear between the gear box and transfer box has worn. As Land Rover don’t sell the shaft separately I’ve been told a new gear box and transfer box are needed for a total of £6000 fitted Shocked Censored

My main question is with the weak diff being replace for the new type has this moved the problem to a different area ie the output shaft of the gear box which causes the spline gears to wear?

My car is a MY04 td6 with 145k on the clock.

I’ve heard of that happening on the 6 speeds (when the spline isn’t greased with the special anti-seize paste) but never before on a 5-speed.

I’ve got a spare transmission output shaft and transfer box input shaft if you’re stuck.

Thanks Phil but its (hopefully) getting sorted.

The garage has sent the gear box off somewhere to get a new shaft put in and should take 7 - 10 days. They have said that Land Rover wont guarantee this fix but hopefully it should only be £2000ish.

I was mainly curious what others thought of this now being a weak point?

I've been told the upgrade (was never officially a recall) was stopped last year.

If you do a search on here I'm sure I've seen pics of the old and new diff but I'm sure if you take your car to a land rover dealer they would be able to check as well.
Another option is to ring a dealer and give your vin to them as it should have been recorded if the upgrade was done.
