I wouldn't worry too much about the v5, as the chaps have said, if it is away having the cherished taken off, it will come back to the dealer who will then probably have to send it off again with your details on and the dvla will then send it directly to you. Thumbs Up

You very rarely walk out of a dealer with a v5, usually just the tear off green slip on the bottom, which apart from to tax the car is pretty useless as you can fill it in youself., the rest of it gets sent back to the dvla to be put into your name. There is nothing that can't be fixed with a hammer😜😜

well, my road legal car was all ok, untill i decided to change the plate to a cherished plate, i rang my insurance, they told me to go to the dvla ofice, or post etc, I went to the office, with all docs, changed it over got the new mot and tax disc, and went home, about a week later we got pulled over all sort of blue lights etc, your car is not insured sir! and they took it away. i rang insurance they said it hadnt been changed over, though the dvla knew it was! but their database was not showing it updated. so i had to go to the carpound and pay £150 . my missus was going to have to pay another £200 plus take 6 points, as she was driving it at the time. the car was insured when they checked the chassis number, and old registration etc.
after some police station explaining, the forms never came through for the penalty, as i think they sort of cancelled it. but i'm still £150 down. if i chase that i might get it all gong through again. its been about 10 months now. so over the 5 months deadline.

had i rang up to CONFIRM the plate was now live on their system i might have saved the HUGE domestic row thet went on that night...

it was HUUUUUUUGE...

Just another question on this. My wife has given her car to our son, with her number in it. She collects a new car tomorrow, which will have its original number on it.
This is where it gets a bit complicated.

She wants to put her number onto her new car and our son wants to put his number (which is on retention) onto his mums old car. Question is, can all this be done at once, or will it have to be done in stages?

It was fine when there was a local office, but not so easy when dealing with DVLA remotely. Got - 2017 SDV8 Autobiography in Loire Blue
Had- 2008 TDV8 Vogue SE in Java black
Had - 2007 S/C in Stornoway Grey

I would do it in stages so that nothing gets mixed up......

Transfer the plate from his car to her new car.
Wait for all paperwork to complete.
Transfer the plate from retention to his new car (mum's old car)

It won't cost any more, it will take a bit longer but worth it as DVLA can't bo Censored cks it up.

Otherwise you are at risk of them transferring his plate from retention to his car and her old plate being lost in the system.... 2006 4.2 SC

From many dealings with DVLA Banging Head, DON'T give them the chance to screw anything up - they will!! Twisted Evil

And when they do, it will take you forever to get it sorted, they are a law unto themselves and are never wrong, even when you have documentary proof that they are!!

You can access the Motor Insurance Database for free to check if your vehicle/registration is showing as insured by going to www.askmid.com - its usually updated daily.

Also with the abolition of the paper tax disc later in the year, the police are going to be relying on the DVLA and MID information more and more so it is even more important that you stay on top of the paperwork! I see a lot of fines coming with the loss of the paper tax disc. Current Fleet:-

Do it all at once. Far quicker and easier for the dvla having all the relevant paperwork for the process in front of them at the same time.

From my own personal experience (not read on the internet or been told by a blokes mate down the pub) I've a few private plates on my cars and motorcycles and chop and change a fair bit and i've never had any problems.
