What do I need to know about 4.4 tdv8?!

Hi guys, coming back to an LR this week. Thought I was getting a 2010 3.6 TdV8 VSE but just has a very nice, 2011 4.4 TDV8 offered for just within my budget. I've done a search but would appreciate any advice. Reliability, running costs, usual, issues or bizarre ones seen, future minefields etc.

My view is that it will hold its money better in the future with the 4.4 and twisty knob change.

Thanks in advance

Miles

I might be wrong but I believe LR took the Brembo brakes off the 2011 car. The 2010 car had 4 piston Brembo's on it and the 2012 had 4 piston Brembo's on it but I think the 2011 were a sort of in between times car where they had standard brakes.

There's a massive difference between the 3.6 and the 4.4. Economy when driven sensibly is much better on the 4.4 and when you plant it the power difference is very noticeable too!

The 4.4 is definitely the right way to go!

Cheers David, I'll check the brakes out today on it. Any views on reliability or anything I need to be aware of? Thanks in advance.

All the TDV8 models can sometimes develop an issue with the turbos, caused by clogged EGRs and the likes. I nearly bought a 3.6 until I found out they were replacing one of the turbos. Then I remembered that every now and then you read about some issues with turbos.

So in the end I decided to buy a 5.0 SC as those engines seem to be more bullet proof Smile

Suggestion is to have the EGRs cleaned regularly and maybe CTC Craig can give you some hints and tips on maintenance to prevent any issues Smile

There was also something with oil not draining from the turbos and that required an upgrade as well, I believe the 2011 TDV8 engines were affected. Check the TSBs I suggest. MY 2010 5.0 SC Galway green and sand interior!!
Have the Faultmate MSV2 Extreme to be tinkering with the settings etc. !!

Think the 2011 should have Brembos, mine does from a Jan 2011 build.

As with any RR you should also do the standard checks for rust on the rear tailgate lip and around the inside of the rear wheel arches.

It should also have had the battery changed to a AGM battery as part of an early campaign to deal with battery issues.

I think the turbo issues ebajema mentions is related to a issue where one of the spring/valves that open/closes the second turbo jams, there was a revised part that get swapped if that occurs. I'm sure I've seen a TSB on here for that but cant find it yet.

There was also an issue that affected some 4.4's that were smoking badly under load that involved drilling a hole in part of the engine to increase oil flow. (more info in this thread)

Some have had starter motor problems but I guess that affects the 3.6 too.

Thanks guys, this was the car I saw which looks great value. Unfortunately it is just outside of my budget so I am going to go the 3.6 tdv8 SE route but it is a cracking car for someone. The chap who is selling it is called Ian and seems a good guy. If anyone is in the market.......

Im certain it was the 2010 3.6tdv8 that dropped brembos only to be reintroduced on 4.4tdv8. That was true i believe of all facelift cars with the 3.6 engine i.e 2009 on. Thumbs Up Present :2008 TDV8 HSE

Yes, all 4.4 TDV8s have the Brembos.

I drove both before I bought mine and really wanted a 4.4 TDV8 over a 3.6 beforehand, after I have driven both I was convinced. I know we don't generally buy these things for cheaper running costs but the extra economy is nice however the extra torque of the 4.4 and the 8 speed gearbox really make the later car worth trying to stretch for if you can.

My research on the Brembo's (which I wanted because I occasionaly tow) was that all 4.4's had them (mine does and so did the very early 4.4 I looked at) I know that the last 3.6's did not have them and whilst I haven't driven a 3.6 without Brembo's, every single response I heard confirmed that they (Brembo's) were a far superior bet.

Incidentally just driven to Geneva in my 4.4 and it was sublime on the motorway.

If you can stretch to a 4.4 I suspect you might save more money in the long term, not from the increased economy (which is nice) but from the not changing cars again at some point soon when you realise the difference 2016 (L405) Autobiography in Black with Ivory - for ULEZ

They are words I hear in my head a lot. Should I have asked Mr Halifax to loan me £15k for a 4.4......in reality I stayed in my avaoilable budget not being a fan of finance and am very pleased with my 3.6.

I do think that in 2-3 years when L405s have dropped in price a touch it will encourage an upgrade trend leaving me with a choice of 2011/12 4.4s...or at least that is what I hope ! Is this where I put the car details and a bit about myself ?........
