Got an hour to kill!

Ho hum...

Sitting with an hour to kill whilst waiting for LR Assistance to turn up as the FF has decided it won't start. When pushing the button all I get is a click from under the bonnet and nothing else.

It's been doing it intermittently now for a while and the dealer advised that it was due to lack of use having only done 4500 miles in a year. Anyway, after a trip to North Wales this weekend it got worse.

Whilst we were away it was taking 8 or 9 attempts to get it to start. Now it won't go at all Big Cry

Be interesting watching them recover it as it's parked in the shed too!

LR Assistance have just been and apparently the starter motor is knackered so it's going to the dealer in the morning Sad

Unfortunately not Kurt! It's a 75ft x 30ft garage with a 15ft door at the front so once I've had a quick clear up tonight the truck should be able to get in easily enough.

Apparently we're getting a "same brand" courtesy car so lets see what they hand over!

"lack of use"..!! In that case the starter should be like new... Whistle
They'll say anything if they are not sure what is causing a fault. At least the warranty will cover it. Previously..

When you push the button everything lights up normally and you get a metallic click from the solenoid on the starter motor. it'll do it a few times and then usually start. When it does start it fires instantly and turns over as normal.

LR Assist guy said that it's definitely not the battery.

It's just back from a 700 mile round trip this weekend so definitely shouldn't be the battery!

I asked for an L405 for the day but the LR guy said that Enterprise who do the LR Assist vehicles don't have any of the new ones and that I'd need to speak to the dealer for one however the sales team had all gone home by this time so will need to arrange that for another day.

starter motors are a two stage operation..

first click will be the solenoid engaging, if you had no battery that wouldn't happen.

second stage is the motor actually turning over the engine via a pinion gear, now if that doesn't engage properly or at all, sometimes you hear a whizzing noise other times you hear a clonk as its just hits the flywheel.

they are really sensitive bits of kit, if you keep trying to crank the engine over without pauses, you can overheat them.. iv'e seen a few where the battery has been too weak to crank over the engine and the owner keeps trying to turn over the engine and fry's the starter motor ( not saying you've done this Wink ).

if you get a chance to see the size of the pinion gear once its out just look how small it is, for how big an engine it has to turn over.. and if you're really interested look at the compression ratio's on a diesel engine to get it going compared to a petrol Laughing

good luck Bushy

I know how the starters work as I've rebuilt several of them over the years, quite interesting bits of kit in some ways.

This one wasn't getting hot or over worked as it was doing nothing other then just clicking, the car wasn't even trying to turn over and it was doing it from stone cold when the car hadn't been used for a week.

Interesting to hear you've had the same problems Pfazz, ours is in the dealer just now so hoping they'll just replace the starter as it's getting daft now having to hope it starts when you try.

We've been given a 13 plate Freelander 2 SD4 HSE as a hire car whilst it's in. Enterprise guy apologised profusely thinking I'd be angry that they only had a Freelander to give us. It's actually a nice car. We've been thinking about changing the V6 Freelander for one so it's nice to have one for a couple of days to put through it's paces.

One thing I noticed about it on the way home was the seats aren't as long in the base as the RR. You notice them stop a long way before your knees.

Anyway, we'll stick a few miles on it and see how we get on but so far I quite like it.

Well after two days of hearing nothing from the dealer I rang them today to find out what was going on with the car.

They've replicated the fault and have ordered a new starter motor for it. They're hoping to have it tomorrow but have guaranteed to have it back by the weekend.

Quite like the FL 2 though. We've got an SD4 HSE which has everything on it. The only thing I don't like about it is the short seat base which means that the back of your thighs get uncomfy when in it for a while compared to the FFRR.

Interesting. My vehicle just had the starter motor replaced on the 4.4TDV8 engine.

Weak spot?

Hmm, I bloomin' hope not!

You chaps with failed starter motors, how many miles have you racked up at failure time? I'm just wondering if its a failure connected to lack of use, possibly corrosion related. Mine has covered 39k now and as far as I can see on the paperwork that came with it has not had a new starter fitted since manufacture. 4.4 TDV8 Vogue Baltic Blue MY11
