Electrical gremlins? Help...

Cant figure out what is going on...

For a few days I've been seeing the air susp. inactive message and bong coming and going along with the following:

no indicator flash on door locking/unlocking
even sometimes not being able to lock the doors
no steering wheel access movement on turning off the car
erratic mirror dipping/going back to memory position when going into reverse
car not recognising the key fob when in proximity and releasing steering lock

I thought it was a flat battery since it is very similar to what happened when I had to change out my battery 8 months ago

Bought a CTEK MXS 5 charger thinking this will solve the issue since we just did a fairly rare 250 mile journey with air con, lights, music, satnav, rear power socket in use and assumed the battery was drained.

According to the CTEK the battery has ok charge - didn't even take all that long.

Connected the IIDtool today and got:
EAS - 33--k bus fault
Instrument pack - 87--K bus fault

The EAS fault cannot be cleared - update failed

Also some of the ECUs say "no comm with ECU" when I try to read the faults.

Any ideas?

All points to battery/voltage as you say. Alternator OK?

If you have a fault that won't clear, try emailing the GAP boys, they can probably assist with fault identification. .
Experience is the only genuine knowledge, but as time passes, I have forgotten more than I can remember Wink

Any way to check the alternator or do I need a volt meter?
Voltage test on the service menu reads 12.5V with everything off 13.5 - 13.8 with engine idling

I had similar problems last year with the Air Suspension, Passenger Mirror not dipping on reverse, Steering Wheel not adjusting on turning off the ignition etc with my MY2002 Vogue.

It took my independant LR garage some time to trace but the cause was eventually found to be a K-bus fault due to the headlight levelling unit being U/S. Once this had been sorted all the other functions were restored.

Hope this helps Peter Kemp

This could be it as the k bus has a fault on the iid tool. Waiting to hear back from gap team now.
How much did it cost you in the end?

Hello gav,

My garage said it took them three hours to trace and repair the K-bus fault @ a labour rate of £72 an hour (October 2013) if this is any help. It doesn't look from the invoice if they had to replace any parts in curing the fault.

My total bill for repairs was £687.67 but this also included tracing and repairing a very bad leak in the AC (Low Pressure Pipe replaced / re-gassing) and trying to trace the cause of the Engine Management Light coming on intermittently (possible O2 sensor).

One of the lower cost garage bills for my RR!

Best Wishes Peter Kemp

Well that doesn't sound too painful. I got a fantastic in depth response from Patrick at gapteam for finding the fault. I tried a hard reset which didn't help. Next I will check all fuses and the headlight ecus.
After that it will have to go in.
The problem now is that the steering wheel controls have also stopped working so my iid tool is also useless.

Here is an update:

Took it into my local Indy last week because after the fantastic help from Patrick at Gapteam, checking fuses and a hard reset, it wasn't getting any better and I didn't want to start pulling out ECUs.

Indy scratched his head and said he has never seen a K-bus fault before but we booked it in for this Monday and he will work through the wiring/ecu suspects with the diagnostic tool technicians on the phone.

Meanwhile the other day, I noticed while fiddling, that the drain pipe situated in the battery bay that connects to below the windscreen was disconnected. The carpet in the passenger foot well was wet too. connected the pipe back up and dried out the carpet a few days ago.

Today: All errors disappeared! indicators now flashing on locking and steering wheel lock is working! first time in almost two weeks it is all working ok. Too scared to plug in the IIDtool to see if it is communicating with all ECUs ok though - I'll do it tomorrow.

I will still take it in on Monday and have the wiring looked at but I suppose it could have been water ingress in the electrics on the passenger side either behind the battery or under it???

Get the garage to check for water damage to the headlight levelling ECU, it's located at low level on the passenger side outer side panel near the floor. Wink Thumbs Up
