2006 FFRR 4.2SC. What to look out for?

Evenin' all.

I'm going to view a FF 2006 4.2SC tomorrow that has covered around 120,000 miles.

I've yet to own a Range Rover, so any advice on what to look, feel or listen out for would be greatly appreciated.

The engine oil to coolant cooler should be replaced (the early ones failed and engine oil and coolant mix) and the same type cooler is also used for gearbox to engine coolant, same problem. On my 2006 both failed within a month of each other.

Considering the age the suspension airbags are nearing their replacement point (since the front includes the shocks, not a bad thing). You are unlikely being able to inspect, on mine we could only see it once the struts were removed and the bags fully blown up (difficult since they were leaking badly). All the cracks were well within the folds.

The gearbox may have the 3-4 shift problem, we (RRPhil and some forum members) have tracked it down to a single solenoid in the gearbox Mechatronic so easy to resolve.

At this mileage the gearbox oil and filter should have been changed (100,000 miles actually).

These are a few of the "hot items" on the SCs.

Suggest to get all ECUs re-flashed with the latest software to eliminate any issues like Engine Management Light coming on for no good reason and gearbox ECU to be up to date.

Also this might seem very minor but make sure all the toys like venture cam, rear earphones and remote for the rear entertainment are present as although not a major issue why should you get an in imcomplete SC and also the spare wheel is a full size alloy the same as the rest etc and obviously a very thorough service history. Ebajema, jamoresby and Sandyt, thanks very much indeed for the information (I could only view on my phone but got the gist of most of it).

I viewed the car, and although I couldn't do any of the mechanical checks advised, I did notice that the gear changes were smooth and that everything works on the car. Venturecam and its accessories and also the headphones were all with the car.

However, (I have started a separate thread on this query, btw).

I wanted to test the acceleration and from a standing start I was a little disappointed.
I was expecting to be thrown back into my seat, but there was none of that!
I looked down at the clock to see when the car would reach 60mph and lo and behold it was travelling at almost 75!
Is my lack of a thrill from this experience due to the RR accelerating in a refined manner or am I missing something? It just didn't seem that fast.


When accelerating from the standing start, one thing I did notice was a whooshing air sound coming from (at a guess) the N/S front wing. Is this normal?

I have an 06 4.2 SC and they are deceptively quick.

In comparison to previous cars I've owned that were turbo charged, it feels more refined, the supercharger is essentially linear in its power delivery as opposed to a bit of a sudden rush with a big turbo. Don't forget how much weight you're having to accelerate from standstill, 2.5 tonnes.

Where they really pay off is when up and running, they just keep going and going like they'll never run out of power. Which in the real world, is where you need the power (overtaking).

You should have taken a TD6 out for a blast first, then you'd have been impressed Thumbs Up

The noise you heard could have been either the supercharger, more of a whine, or the viscous fan if it was hot.

They're a lovely car, if you get one you'll not feel wanting for more. Yes there are cars, including the 5.0SC that are quicker, but the 4.2 is really quick enough.

It was never going to be a TD6. I'm not really a fast driver, but when there's a time and a place, it's nice to have some oomph. Razz I've had 7 Mercedes-Benz cars and vans and the turbo diesels (3.2 straight 6 & 3.0V6) have been super engines and never failed to put a smile on my face. I currently have an E430 V8 which surges pretty nicely too, so maybe I have to become accustomed to a smoother delivery with the RR. I'll be picking it up this evening, so I'll have a better chance evaluate it on my (most probably extended) journey home.

The lack of "experience" when flooring the throttle is what it should be. On the 4.2 you can hear the supercharger making a bit of noise, the 5.0 is super quiet. It is scary how little you notice of the 400 BHP being unleashed (or 500 BHP on the 5.0) as you hit the throttle.

Opening the window and switching to a sport exhaust will give you more of the sound if you like Smile MY 2010 5.0 SC Galway green and sand interior!!

Can you please show me which engine oil cooler to coolant you refering too , i had oil bubble up throught my coolant bottle.

My car didnt overheat or any white smoke indicTing headgasket. But i cant seem to find the engine oil cooler .
I immediately knew what you were refering too , can you please advise the part ni ber or location. I cant pm yet. New to the group
