Air Compressor Silica Beads replace or clean and oven bake

2002 air compressor - was going to strip down to service or replace drier beads

Does anyone know what beads / quantity I need or do you simply bake the old ones?

I did search the forum for an answer as I felt I had seen one in the past but could not find it.... Big Cry Howard

do you have a vacuum pump, or access to? the best way to remove moisture is seal them in an air tight vessel and take it down to 1 torr vacuum.

Mine got soaked when swimming in Wales.... put them in a baking tin and gave them 30mins at 120degC lovely and dry... be careful when you take them out they tend to fly about a lot... there is a bit of fabric top and bottom to hold them in, it's against a perforated disc, mine had dirty marks where the holes were, just turned the fabric till a clean bit was in sight... Pete

Thanks @stan - I did check the wiki but it did not seem to give much info on buying replacements

@sasdisco - many thanks for the advice - I was wondering if Hugh Grant's ex (Divine) was able to produce 1 Torr

@Haylands - yes I followed your post on the welsh drowning with interest - what amazed me most about that incident was the fact that the FF actually worked again - sometimes they seem such picky beasts it makes you wonder - it restored my faith seeing yours live again. And thanks for the tips on baking and re-using the filters.

@salb - this is the gem of info I needed - I didn't realise they did kits and now found on fleabay kits around £20 with filters etc. Seem to be supplied with about 200g of beads. I was not sure if these are any generic silca beads or something particular to BMW / LR. Howard

Yes I'm amased the pump worked again, it was totally under water and kicked in when I restarted the car so pumped water for a bit... was rather wet inside... sticking them in the oven certainly worked, I stripped it again 2 weeks later to check and it was all nice and bone dry... The pump dries the silica itself, in case you didn't know, the filtered dry air that it fills the system with gets sent back through the silica as it exhausts to dry it out so unless you know it has got water from somewhere there should be no reason to change it.... Pete
