The situation I have is just a slight deposit, discolouration, fogging, misting - whatever, on the inside of the lenses. I'm pretty sure that a rinse out would clean and therefore fix it, question is - is it practical? and if so how? Geoff

Well I won't be doing that then, what about taking out all the bulbs and giving the insides a quick rinse? Geoff

problem with that would be any moisture left in the unit and although you can take the bulbs out the bulb holders will still be in there..

can i suggest getting the later darker headlight units, painting the grill and side vents satin black and then sell your old lights ...  ... - .- -.

There may (or may not) be something in these threads that is of interest.

Suggestions range from removing backing covers, covering the hole with tin foil and leaving the headlights on for a while to dry up the condensation; to leaving a bag of silica gel in the unit for a while to dry up the condensation; to hoovers and hair dryers; and for cleaning the inside of the unit there is mention of a metal coat hanger with a piece of cloth on and all manner of other weird and wonderful novel methods.

If there is nothing on those threads of interest, a key word search on the DW UK forum for "oxidisation" and "condensation" could keep you busy for hours

Likewise, there are videos of people on the internet showing how to restore headlights that are oxidised and suffering from condensation.

Hopefully you'll be able to successfully try one of the quicker, cheaper and safe, low risk fixes

more precisely :

2002-2005 : glass hold on place with metal clips and a rubber seal
2006-2008 : bonded with soft(once warmed) sealant
2009-2012 : (like yours) plastic welded, you'd need to grind them open, they can not be heated and split opened like the previous ones

Some years ago I gave my TD5 headlamps an overhaul and cleaned them. 3 days in a warm airing cupboard worked a treat to rid the moisture

Of course most folk have a combi boiler now so that's drying room ruined ! Is this where I put the car details and a bit about myself ?........

As VD said above, do NOT attempt to open them as they are not sealed in the traditional way & needs to be done by a BRAVE professional
