Unhappy with ride after new tyres.

Evenin' all!

My FF 4.2SC had Continental UHP tyres on when I took ownership.
The ride was fantastically smooth and I could hardly notice a lot of the imperfections in the road surfaces.

I almost went down the Continental route once more (Sport Contact 5 IIRC) but decided on Scorpion P Zero instead.

When I took the car to have the tyres fitted, they set about jacking up the car with two jacks on the O/S to remove both wheels. The car went up and up and up and up until we all looked at each other and one of the tyre fitters said "I think you need to go and lock the suspension at middle height" (that's the only setting I use).

So, with the suspension locked, the tyres were replaced and I was off on my way. 5 miles to home on smooth roads but the next day I was to cover further. As I drove even on the motorway I could tell the tyre pressures were too high. I stopped to check the pressures (the tyres would be reasonably cool by the time I found a filling station) and the rears had 41psi and the fronts... wait for it... had 49psi! No wonder I felt every surface imperfection!

I lowered the pressures to R35 and F33 and have since reduced to R34 and F31 but the ride isn't as soft and smooth as before the new tyre purchase.

I know it's possible that the Scorpion is a harder compound than the Continental, but even allowing for that I'm not happy with the ride at present.

Could something have gone wrong when the tyres were fitted? Do I need to reset the suspension (if that is possible?).

Thanks in advance.

Paul.

when the ATS chaps done mine they put it in standard height, switched on the hazards and left the tailgate down [like in this pic] and i had no suspension height problems..

i suspect the ride you are getting is due to new tyres with 8mm tread as opposed to nearly bald old tyres..if you are getting vibrations via the steering wheel around 50mph then that could be the wheel balancing.. ... - .- -.

Unnecessary quote removed

Tailgate down and hazards on? Please, tell me more!

Car doesn't have any vibration at all at any speed. Cool

I think I'm right in saying that to achieve "motorway height" you need to exceed 100mph for 30 seconds.
It's hardly noticable Wink

Interesting, when I have tyres fitted we go to access mode and lock suspension, no hazards or tailgate shenanigans , does anyone know the 'correct' procedure Thumbs Up

You also have to walk around the vehicle backwards three times after making an offering of a locking wheel nut to appease the Land Rover gods.

Alternatively, just jack it up like the handbooks tell you to ...

Jacket mine up loads of times, never done anything special, never had any issues, I know if you open a door it doesn't let the suspension move but I thought it didn't work with the tailgate... maybe the later ones are different...

Mines always drops to full drop, looks like Stan is at full drop with his, you can just see the locating band for the rear air bag... Pete

I think on the older range ie p38 the tailgate disabled the suspension, but the l322 fattie it doesn't matter, so it compensated.
My experiences with new tyres, is that, they pick up big stones!! And sometimes bang and tick for ages!
