Okay, watch out controversy on the way.......I'd take the VRS Shocked

The reasons that spring to mind;

You'll spend a shed load less on fuel, all the better for the "après" budget

Lets be honest, you are less likely to breakdown and if you do it will be easier, quicker and cheaper to sort

If it gets bumped (it happens a lot in French ski resorts), you'll be less upset

It will make you really appreciate the FF when you get back

So there you go - what do you have to say about that Whistle

Yes, what indeed. Erm, you're tapped fella, that's what I have to say about that. Laughing

Seriously chap, have a word with yourself. A Bride doesn't keep her wedding dress in the box in case it gets red wine spilled on it at the reception so why have a FFRR and take a lesser car on holiday?

Put the VRS on a trailer behind the FFRR and put all luggage in the VRS - Simples Thumbs Up

The FFRR doesn't know a car trailer is there and you'll have more space. If you break down get them to recover the FFRR and trailer and carry on in the VRS.

This is just too easy - ask me a hard one Whistle

Not too worried about getting it bumped as t will be in a secured underground car park for the duration, so should be fairly safe.

If it were a diesel Skoda I would agree with you on fuel but with a petrol vrs the fuel is pretty terrible anyway! There is nothing that can't be fixed with a hammer😜😜

My two cents worth:

I don't know the state of your FFRR, but if you're worried it can't make the trip, why have the car in the first place? It either needs some TLC air a replacement. It's not like one has an FFRR as a urban runabout only, like a Smart car.
If you're worried about parking lot bumps, that's a different story. I've taken nonFFRRs in the past just because I know where they'll be parked.

Realistically its in very good nick, fully serviced, and then some, alternator, turbo hoses, battery, suspension bits, brakes, gearbox service, all diff oils done, trams box done, and after the trips in the summer I'm sure it would make it there and back and I'm just being paranoid apart from an issue with the brakes on the St Tropez trip (leaking bleed nipple on front caliber contaminated the front pads) it was smooth and faultless the whole of that trip cruising at 85 all day kids watching films and swmbo sleeping. And in the end I have RAC Europe with Barclays so they will recover it and lend me a car if all goes wrong.

And I have a bodyshop chap who can straighten it if it gets bent.😳

And it's only on 72k... Thumbs Up it's not so much the length of the trip as I wouldn't think twice about jumping in and driving to the highlands or Cornwall, and it does regularly do trips of several hundred miles at a time without fail, it's just the one time I need it not to fail.........I'm sure it won't. There is nothing that can't be fixed with a hammer😜😜

Mines dome 108k & I wouldn't even think twice about taking it.

We burst a coolant hose on the run up to the resort last year - but just about made it there. I had the RAC out on the Monday morning, they couldn't find the leak in the car park so recovered it to a local garage who repaired it.

The bad bits of that experience were 1) I had to collect it - they sorted me out a taxi (and paid for it), but wouldn't return the car to the hotel 2) I had to pay all the garage costs - around £200 - RAC are a recovery service & only cover the roadside costs, I did save about £50 on car parking (as I didn't collect it until the Friday), so that offset it a bit.

It was a lower hose - even on a ramp they said they struggled to pinpoint it

The week of 7th there are ⅓ of the French schools off. We're going a week later when ⅔ of them are off - along with most of the UK schools Big Cry

Ah, yes that is tricky enough to get at. Will give all the hoses a good going over though I think they are all sound.

Sounds like I might have struck it a bit lucky with the dates then! There is nothing that can't be fixed with a hammer😜😜

I punctured one on the way to Bordeaux this summer - there's one that runs under the expansion tank - the pipe was resting on a bolt head & must have worn it's way through - it was literally right under the expansion tank.

The piece of pipe wasn't available on it's own - only as part of a £200 set Shocked but it turned out I could use a piece of generic hose (19mm I think)

Easy to fix, but needed the expansion tank removing just to get to the pipe Thumbs Up

Other than that, I've also done, batteries, alternator & turbo hoses Very Happy

Come on guys, it isn't right that to be able to drive to the Alps with confidence, you need to carry a roll of tape - and you wonder why I suggested taking the Skoda Whistle
