After close inspection by yours truly this afternoon, the oil is not leaking from the oil filter. It is leaking from this component above the oil filter.

You can see where the MD has unsuccessfully tried to make do and mend with ineffective black sealant around the figure 8 shaped gasket mating faces because the proper seal was on back order and not available to them at the time.

Obviously, I now have the correct new gasket seal/ O ring (photographed earlier in this thread) but access for me to do it seems tricky with the car on axle stands.

I think the part leaking and which the new figure 8 O-ring gasket seal is for is called the Oil Filter Housing.

This is an LR warrantied repair.

Car will be booked in hopefully to replace the oil filter housing gasket seal.

If a new LR part/ figure of 8 oil filter gasket seal was fitted then oil still weeping from the figure 8 component mating face, what could be the issue?

I can think of several potential problems :

- Scratch on sealing surfaces allowing oil to leak past the gasket
- One of the components warped so it won't seal properly
- Bolt (if any) damaged so you can get enough pressure on the seal
- Different leak path (crack somewhere) that is not visible but it will look like the oil is leaking past the seal while it really is coming from somewhere else close. Hairline cracks can be very difficult to spot on parts like these and may only open enough when the engine is warm or cold depending on where the crack is.
- Oil pressure much higher than seal capacity due to local blockage (highly unlikely I would say but for completeness sake)

My suggestion is to steam clean the general area (stay away from electrics if possible) and then start and see if you can see the actual leak starting again. MY 2010 5.0 SC Galway green and sand interior!!
Have the Faultmate MSV2 Extreme to be tinkering with the settings etc. !!

Noted re possible causes and particularly interested re your consideration re damaged bolts.

The entire underside of the engine bay was cleaned off with brake cleaner yday so we could assess if there were any other leak sources.

Overnight, with the car sitting idle on a flat surface, there has formed, 'just one' teardrop leak on the figure 8 mating face. It definitely appears to have leaked from the figure 8 LR supplied Gasket Seal. Hopefully just a settling in period and the seal will expand/ grow into the role and no more leaks?

No worries mate. Without seeing the actual part up close it is the best I can do, just based on years of tinkering with cars, hydraulics and the likes.

The black sealant is clearly someone who has no clue and just starts applying the sealant all over without realizing it could potentially cause a problem somewhere else. No proper mechanic will do this, any decent mechanic will source the actual problem and resolve it properly since these sort of crappy solutions never last anyway.

I hope that you do get to the bottom of it and get it sealed, it would be nice to get the car in tiptop shape at some point so you have a great car for the next years.  MY 2010 5.0 SC Galway green and sand interior!!

Based on some online research it seems the oil filter housing can be a common oil leak component on the RR?

Whilst it seems like the figure 8 shaped rubber O-ring seal is the obvious leak source on our car, it is not a major leak, more of a constant weep. It's always possible the source is above the oil filter housing or from another seal on the housing, although I'm fairly certain it's coming from the figure 8 O-ring seal.

I'm wondering whether to have the figure 8 O-ring seal replaced and while having that done, just have all seals/ key components for the oil filter housing replaced which, according to the workshop manual would appear to be these:

* Both oil cooler hose adapter O-ring seals

* Oil filter housing figure 8 shape O-ring seal

* Auxiliary oil cooler thermostat O-ring seal

* Oil filter seal

* The 3 main oil filter housing long bolts

Anyone any experience of leaks from this oil filter housing and whether any other components I've not mentioned could or should be changed, eg oil cooler hoses or the actual oil filter housing

Well, had good look at this problem now.

Cleaned leaked oil off the underside of the engine components last weekend and left the car on axle stands with the engine running for hours, monitoring where oil leaks were appearing from.

It is leaking from a number of areas. Not big leaks but from the oil filter housing gasket seal and also leaking from bolts along the side of the engine block at the back of where the oil filter housing is mated to.

Booked back into the main dealer for them to try and fix yet again as the leaks arise from warrantied repairs.
