Interesting debate.

The main reason for considering changing in first place, though, was the terminal quality of the petrol car on other fronts. Dreadful petrol vapour smell once the car was warmed through and standing in traffic (yes, went back to the dealer a lot and many components replaced, fbh disconnected...still did it to the day it went back). Also, the calibration of the gearbox to engine was woeful - poor synch of throttle blip on downshifts, too much throttle on rolling-upshifts causing an unpleasant surge forward...miles off what AMG deliver.

No petrol/exhaust smells from mine although I did have exhaust fumes entering the cabin on a V6 diesel loaner I had once.

I have no issues with the shifts on the gearbox, in fact I think the gearbox has excellent responses going both up and down the box (maybe a software issue with the one you had).

dealer managed to get SC (although Sport...mmm) for me to give a 'cruise in'. Smile .

the towing issue keeps niggling, but then I think back to a few years ago.... towing with Sierras, Mondeos, V70T5.... and heavier caravans than now,, so ... they now pricing up ffrr SC. just the colour... Miariana Black but haven't seen in flesh, 5.0 have you a picture of yours in normal light and sunlight? cheers

E30 M3 nice. My son has an E36 328 which makes a lovely sound and makes me jealous.

As for the family bus we have a D3 which does that task without drama.

5.0 that looks fabulous.

Not idling cold it isn't! (Will concede that they sound great at a few more revs though).

You're quite right, Trommel - I had an E60 M5 nearly ten years ago (where did that time go...). Idling, particularly cold, the motor sounded really uninspiring and unsporting...but, wound-out, nothing like it for near-mortal expenditure.

Such a shame that it was attached to that horrible SMG. I suspect that in due course it will become quite hard to sell anything that 'enjoys' that generation/type of 'box. Future buyers familiar with the latest generation of DSG-alikes simply won't believe what we were fobbed-off with in the name of "F1-inspired" gear changing...

Haven't experienced the vibration/resonance but there's no denying the V8 diesel sounds agricultural at idle from outside. Torque delivery definitely suits the type of vehicle though.

Anyone have experience of the Cayenne S Diesel by way of comparison?

Agreed, although I found myself, a propos of nothing in particular, looking at a Diesel S the other day in a mid-blue colour, no privacy glass (I know, I thought there was a law against that, too...) and sensible wheels...and I could see the attraction, albeit a different proposition to the Range Rover proper.
