L405. changing

Hi,
the L405 sdv8 is coming up for year old, looking at changing to the 5.0 v8.. Has anyone gone from the 4.4 to the 5.0? Views and opinions please.

Plus anyone with Mariana Black in colour?

And views on the deployable steps?

We've gone the other way, 5.0sc to SDV8.

As a family bus, the SDV8 probably better suits the car. Still more than enough performance and slightly more refined.

It's just not that practical or...soothing for passengers to use the incremental performance of the 5.0sc other than on the motorway when accelerating at higher speeds (in Germany, m'lud...). Also, the sc doesn't seem to quite have that AMG-like torque waft so there's a bit too much gear-changing going on.

One-up, the 5.0sc is a bit of a hoot but it still isn't an sports car, to use a Clarkson/Porter-ism. The sc engine does work very well, though, in the RRS.

...oh, and those cars we've tried with the deployable leg-breakers were hateful. They look awful and, if you're average height or above, you end up stepping round them which is just bonkers: you stop, open the door, put a foot on the ground and the step extends out and chops the ankle. Nice...so, you just end up making an exaggerated lunge out of the door to avoid the chop...

On colours, both of our 405s have been green, which seems to generate universally positive and non-aggressive attention.

Flugplatz Thanks for useful comments. I had a c63 when I had the l322, so know what you mean re AMG torque, not expecting same with L405 but would expect it pull continuously through gears...... Heard similar comments re steps!

Flugplatz, agree completely about the steps. They would not last long with the sort of use I give my FFRR.

I know what you mean about the torque of the SDV8 compared to the 5.0, it is noticeable, but I have fallen out of love with the diesel experience. Coming from years of motorsport I like the sound, free revving and 'lighter' feeling of a petrol engine.

I am not sure how one could consider the diesel to be more refined. The levels of NVH in the V8 diesel are considerable compared to the petrol. When I had a V8 diesel as a loaner I could not believe how noisy it was when accelerating from rest. It was really unpleasant. The diesel engine is very outdated and unrefined when you compare it to BMW and Mercedes standards. In terms of refinement the V6 diesel is less noisy.

I can't see why one would choose the diesel over the petrol other than for reasons of economy (it may be better for towing I can't comment on this as I don't tow).

The only way to decide is to drive them all back to back and make your own mind up.

Mine is Mariana Black. Looks like black until it is in direct sunlight and then you spot the blue fleck. Like all black cars though it needs to be kept clean to look good.

Our local JLR senior tech cannot detect the NVH that drives me mad. All the SDV8's I have driven suffer from a particular driveline and exhaust resonance and that is not present in the SDV6. He tells me that I should have been a surgeon if I can detect these things.

Interesting debate.

In part, we swapped from petrol to SDV8 because the diesel actually seems better in terms of fitness for purpose. Personally, I would have an AMG V8 in every vehicle in the family, but the sc ironically felt slightly slight on torque - it always felt like it needed two downshifts to roll-on.

The main reason for considering changing in first place, though, was the terminal quality of the petrol car on other fronts. Dreadful petrol vapour smell once the car was warmed through and standing in traffic (yes, went back to the dealer a lot and many components replaced, fbh disconnected...still did it to the day it went back). Also, the calibration of the gearbox to engine was woeful - poor synch of throttle blip on downshifts, too much throttle on rolling-upshifts causing an unpleasant surge forward...miles off what AMG deliver.

Do I miss the petrol in principle? Yes, of course. But the SDV8, for us (other opinions are available) just works better as a family bus.

Nick, I know exactly what you mean. I'm lucky enough to have raced at the 'Ring the first E30 M3 that won the DTM, a Zakspeed-run car. Engine bogs below 4,500rpm, sings to 9,000rpm, lovely.

2019 Range Rover Autobiography SDV8 Aintree Green

Haven't experienced the vibration/resonance but there's no denying the V8 diesel sounds agricultural at idle from outside. Torque delivery definitely suits the type of vehicle though.

Anyone have experience of the Cayenne S Diesel by way of comparison?
