Australia 2007 Range Rover Supercharged 4.2 SC V8 Zermatt Silver
2012 Front Brakes

I've noticed on the 2012 FFRR and maybe other years the same too, but front brake calipers on some are small bodied single piston brake calipers and others have a large bodied 6 piston caliper.

Why did LR do this and what model variants had the two types? Was it an option? Seems a retro step to go single piston for a car needing pretty healthy braking capacity.

I hope someone knows about this one?

Thumbs Up

The naturally aspirated 5.0 has the 3.0 D4/RRS 2-piston calipers.

Australia 2008 Range Rover Supercharged 4.2 SC V8 Rimini Red

When Land Rover brought out the last major upgrade to the Range Rover with the TFT screen the 3.6 TDV8 ( and apparently the 5L N/A ) were " down graded"to the sliding calliper brakes but the new SC 5L was given the six pot Brembo's ,then a year later when he 4.4 TDV8 came out with the 8 speed "box" Land Rover could announce a brake upgrade across the range . Bad call but good marketing . 2008 MY Supercharged

As above Thumbs Up

All 2009my> TFT screened 3.6's lost Brembo brakes...
JLR upgraded to 6 pot Brembo's with the release of the 4.4TDV8 engine in 2011...

So, either you are incorrect in the 2012my sir Whistle or it took a year to filter down under? Whistle

Microcat shows the 2-pot calipers for all 2010-2012 with na 5.0 engines.

Edit: Here's the VIN SALLMAMD3CA362633 of one for sale at the moment that from pictures is obvious that it doesn't have the Brembos fitted to the 4.4 TDV8

MY12 still built up to about the end of June 2012 with some sold here until at least the end of 2012. Hence the OP's observations are not unexpected.

Shocked

Right sir! When was the 4.4TDV8 released to market? As that will give you an exact date when the 6pot Brembo's were installed across the range... Thumbs Up

2011 model year[edit]
The 2011 model year Range Rovers include minor styling changes, improved interiors and an upgraded 4x4 system as well new optional packages.[9] A new 4.4 litre TDV8 diesel engine will become available with a new ZF 8HP70 eight-speed automatic transmission. There are also new leather and wood colours, as well as reclining rear seats with winged headrests. A new Autobiography Black model features a different grille, Barolo Black paintwork, and a choice of Jet/Ivory or Jet/Pimento interiors.

Production[edit]
Honeywell Turbo Technologies produced the turbochargers used in LR-TDV8 engine from 2011 Range Rover.[10]

Australia 2012 Range Rover Autobiography TDV8 Bournville

The 4.4 TDV8 was available in a Sept 2010 built MY11 eg SALLMAMH3BA336273 yet my supplied VIN above is for an August 2011 built MY12 na 5.0 without Brembos, as observed from pictures that are supposed to be of the same vehicle as the VIN. Hence I can't see how "Brembos across the range" can coincide with the release of the 4.4 TDV8 unless in practice the UK did not get the na 5.0.

I wonder how the 2010 3.6's braking compares with the D4's use of the same caliper. I note that the pads have different part numbers and do not know if they use the same size disk - certainly not the same part numbers. However with not that much difference in vehicle weights I expected pretty much the same result. I was considering fitting the lesser calipers if I needed to fit Compomotive 18" rims for better off-road tyres, having been happy with the 2.7 brakes I fitted to the D4 to allow 17" rims to be used.

Australia 2013 Range Rover Autobiography SDV8 Fuji White

Crispy, thanks for opening the discussion on this topic. Looking at upgrading from a 3.6TDV8 to a later model 322 (SWMBO has a distinct preference for the "boxy shaped range rovers". Towing our caravan, which weighs in at about 3.1T fully laden, I am super impressed by the TDV8, so while e heart says SC, the mind says TDV8. So... Looking at late model 322 4.4's. Towing a decent weight van, looking to make sure the tug has adequate stopping power! Pi wasn't aware the TDV8 had lost the brembo a at some point, so keeping a watchful eye on this one.
