Why are parcel shelves solid?

Evening all,

Did a few searches but came up blank, so I wanted to ask - why are RR parcel shelves/loadspace covers solid?
In my D2, I had a retractable blind that was great - light, easy to use, and most importantly very easy to remove and stash in the rear footwells should I need to carry a tall load.
The RR one seems a real step backwards - only being able to open the front half of it unless I remove it completely, heavy, cumbersome, hard to remove and refit without marking the rest of the trim, and damn near impossible to stash away if I need to remove it on a trip.
I've had a brief google and can't seem to find a roller blind retrofit either.... bah! NW060

Perfect for me - small dog & we have a ½ height dog guard.

She sits on the shelf & she can see the passengers - leaving the boot free for luggage

We seriously looked at a new Sport before buying the L405 and the roller cover was close to a deal breaker for my wife - I had to convince her I could make a plywood shelf Shocked

+1 Big Cry On the P38 you could store the hard parcel shelf in the slots behind the rear seat Thumbs Up It worked well.
My parcel shelf is never fitted now - but at least it'll look pristine when I come to sell Thumbs Up

Yes I miss that little feature from my P38 - real shame that the L322 didn't carry that idea over, agreed that fitting/refitting the shelf is a PIA and you have to make sure your hands are spotless as well if you have the Ivory colour.

If you want a retractable blind in a load lugger to replace (like for like) in a D2 then, JLR would expect you to buy a D3 & then a D4 sir (both have retractable shelves)

RR’s have had solid shelves since the Classic days Whistle My LSE still has its original folding (in half) shelf fitted...

Cant think of any other reason than that sir Neutral Thumbs Up

It wouldn't be much of a shelf if it wasn't solid.... Smile

As a load space cover though there's no reason for it to be solid.

As Craig says though it's probably just a historical thing. You could use it as a shelf if you have a dog/cargo guard fitted, but I would imagine the same would apply to the discos too.

I agree completely, currently refurbishing all if my marked trim caused by shelf removal. They are a PITA! but at least they have good sound deadening and acoustic properties when installed.

I like it Embarassed

Easy to put light stuff up top without fear that heavier stuff down below will move and crush it, e.g. bread, cakes etc when shopping don't get flattened by cans of milk or wine bottles.

Plus it's a damn good physical barrier to prevent items flying forward in the event of a crash.

As stated above, it also acts as a good acoustic barrier stopping road noise etc etc Thumbs Up

a few battens of wood, couple of hinges and some material stapled to it and you have a diy cover that then can be folded in half if you want to stash it.

Bit frankensteins monster but I'm sure it would do the job. Dan

The RR, as far as I know, is the only one which has one of those rigid parcel shelves.

Taking apart some awkwardness, like having to leave it aside when putting the dog in the back, not being able to store it in the car, etc.., for me, it gives the car a very high quality feel.
The roll ups seems like a very last-minute-cheap-decision-alternative, and you can see the insides of the boot thought the folds in the fabric.
With this one, everything is nice and tidy. And as Cam-Tech-Craig said, they come since the Classics

Heavy? yes
Awkward? Yes
Practical? No

Would I like to have my car without one? Definitely NOT

I have a love / hate relationship with it:

Hate:
- Can't be stored easily
- Not that easy to open close (not terribly bad either mind you)
- Moving tall things not always easy
- Can't store anything on top in case you end up in a crash. Even the ever present box with tissues here and in Nigeria can be pretty dangerous in a crash apparently. Unless of course you have the dog rack but I hate those even more !!

Love:
- Makes the back look tidy even if there is a mess below
- Sound proofing (I love quiet cars)
- Great when loading for temporarily putting stuff on top
- Stays looking nice over the years as it won't start sagging

Wouldn't want to replace it with anything "soft" tbh although it is far from perfect. MY 2010 5.0 SC Galway green and sand interior!!
Have the Faultmate MSV2 Extreme to be tinkering with the settings etc. !!

My car has a retractable cargo net fitted (not a dog rack) very handy I suppose even though I have yet to put anything on the shelf Cool Both my parents and brothers cars all have pull over blinds and they look awful once they start to sag and are easily damaged, so for me I am more than happy having a solid shelf.
