Can anybody identify the heat shield (and part no) in this last picture of Shaun’s write up? I have spent most of last night and today trying to find it, the only thing that vaguely matches the description and location is LR022797 but the shape and orientation don’t seem to be anything like what is shown in a Shaun’s picture.

Thanks in advance, trying to eliminate a burning smell since replacing the starter. Noticed that this shield was not present. 2012 4.4TDV8 AB

Just replaced mine on my 4.4 TDV8, just a couple of extra notes
The Solenoid has to be facing the rear of the car to get it out so turn starter 180 degrees then twist.
Anti roll bar has to be down so jack car from off road height and put on axle stands to give max amount of room.

I took my old one apart and the input contact is covered in carbon, no obvious damage so I might clean and put unit of shelf ready for next change in 7 years !

Time for Job around two hours.

(Also cleaned engine subframe and painted with Hammetite while it was up on stands

My 2012 4.4 TDV8 is in right now for fitting of it's new battery however on the way here, I had to stop off ajd found it wouldn't start first time when I had to move off again. I got the clicking. On try 3 or 4 it fired up and off I went. So search here and found threads talking about starter motors...

Did everyone go for the Denso? Is that the same make as LR use? As I see lots of other brands online too for a range of prices. For example...

Thanks for the replies. I figured Denso was the one to go for - thanks for the forum discount code Mike!

Markin - the link you sent seems interesting. COuldn't tell from that whether they were offering to rebuild my motor or provide me with a rebuilt motor but seemed to suggest next day delivery, which isn't much time to wait at all! I shot them a mail anyway as curious to see what they come back with

The new battery is in now, so will see how everything performs. Hopefully that was the culprit and on further action needed!

Ive just replaced my starter on 2012 4.4tdv8, I had the intermittent click with no start issue... was able to get the starter reconditioned for £95 from place in Brum.

Just a couple of points to add I was able to remove the starter with only moving the heat shield, I didn't remove the wheel at all I literally put suspension to off road and then removed the earth off battery. I put scissor jack under drivers side for safety and then able to undo the heat shield and remove the wires to the starter, then just remove the two bolts holding the starter, then drops out through the bottom, it is a very very tight fit but I don't see how it helps in anyway to take it out the side with wheel removal, its actually a very simple job just very fiddly especially doing it on the driveway, but is 100% doable in an evening I got the stater out and back in within 24hrs.

Thanks to this guide and the other write ups I am slowly but surely getting my one up and running properly

The relay is part of the starter, theoretically you could fit a new remote relay and bypass the one on the starter but a lot easier just to replace the original. 2012 tdv8 Westminster arrived Jan 19 gone Dec 23

I changed the starter on a 4.4 TDV8 at the weekend and there was no way I could get it out around the anti roll bar unless disconnected.

The car was a total non start so I could not change the ride height from standard. I jacked up both sides at the front so the wheels were off the ground and then undid the drop links where they attach to the anti roll bar. I could then hold the anti roll bar down on the drivers side with a pry bar to get enough space.

Not a bad job to do to be honest

Great thread.
I have the Click Click sometimes when starting normally when very cold.
I have charged the battery and it has improved but will change the starter when the other jobs are done.

My advice is don't delay doing this. This car went from doing it occasionally but always starting on the second try to being completely dead very quickly!
