High Revs

Took the tin tent to N.Wales for first time with my "new" L322 vogue. She behaved well but on 2 occasions I noticed that after pulling off to refuel, when rejoining traffic and accelerating to speed the revs stayed high(3500) for a minute or so before dropping to the 2000 or so I was getting for the same speed before I stopped. Is this normal or a sign of a fault coming on ? I would be grateful for any insights/info Confused

They hold onto gears longer before changing when towing so its a bit hard to say. Mine has done the same on occasions when towing depending on the weight of the load and incline of the road.

Sounds like its trying to cool down. If it worked hard while towing with limited sopeds and thus limited cooling air speed, then aftre stopping, the temps in engine and gearbox would be higher than while driving. So it might just try and be clever and cool the fluids down with more revs and more fluid pumping plus more engine fan speed. You usually hear the viscous fan quite loud if its fully engaged. Which rarely happens in normal road use.
What type of engine and Ear do you run?

Hi Heppsen, The engine is 4.4 v8 with LPG conversion. The temp needle never flickered during the trip even at higher revs but what do you mean by 'Ear' ? This vehicle is even cleverer than I thought if what you say is right !

I think it's normal. It might be the transmission trying to out guess you. I find that, after a sudden, hard acceleration, it wants to hold a lower gear just in case I'm going to do it again. I just take my foot of the accelerator completely and it changes up. Then back to normal driving.

Most automatics do something similar, because you've still got your foot down, it stays in kick down. Just lift your foot off the accelerator slightly and they'll normally change up to the next gear.

Thanks for the replies guys, I did try easing off the accelerator but maybe not enough. The second time it changed down a little quicker. As you have said it may have been down to the gradient at the time. After my experiences with my p38 i had eyes only for the temp gauge ! Nice to know that the 322 can think for me. Cheers.

You are talking about gearbox 'lock-up' or more accurately speaking torque converter lock up. If you are slipping for a long time, you should either push a bit harder for a short time to gain a little speed, and then ease off, and the gearbox should lock up. Meaning virtually direct drive. This will bring down the revs. Car should feel better on the pedal. If you are aware of 'finding lockup' you can drive when towing much easier. You can either manually hold a gear longer to get lock up, or plan your gradient assent accordingly. -otherwise you are basically getting slip for longer than is usual, and creating heat, and lower mpg.
