Suspension air reservoir

I was just planning the repair of my corroded rear wheel arches when I spotted the terrible state of my air resevoir.

I shall get onto Dan for a replacement and have done a search on the forum for tips on replacement, especially regarding the connectors at the ends, but found nothing.

Has anyone any experience of swapping these and is there anything I should do at the same time.

It is a silly fiddly job! So many things to remove in order to get at it, plus the disconnection of all the pipes to all the corners.

Make sure you have enough height below the car to drop the tank cover, and take special care removing and replacing all the pipe connections on the block valve, e.g. not cross threading any! it is a fiddly tight place to get them all back on.

The valve block might come away from the rubber mountings on the reservoir, you will need to use some creativity and extra special glue to stick it on to the new one, unless you can get some new mountings from Duckworths.

I had the valve apart whilst it was off, no problems with mine in terms of corrosion inside, others have had much worse. .

Thanks chaps. Tips well received.

The current resevoir is peppered with holes with the deep blisters. I hope it holds out for a few weeks before I can get time to do it.

Will report back. 2014 5.0 Supercharged Autobiography & 2015 3.0SDV6 HSE Lux Discovery 4

At this stage of corrosion, I would strongly recommend checking the brake lines underneath the cover along the left hand sill ( thats where they are on a LHD vehicle)

^^^^ Agree!

That said, I am surprised to see corrosion on the reservoir. Mine (if original on an '02) is (or appears to be) of galvanised construction and not a sign of rust anywhere.

Brake pipes were in a state though Wink .

Funny you should mention the brake lines. I inspected them last year and decided to invest in genuine new rear lines that run down the nearside. I have still yet to work out how to fit them. Especially the line for the offside rear as it is in one piece and unlikely to survive the process of threading it through and across the rear axle. 2014 5.0 Supercharged Autobiography & 2015 3.0SDV6 HSE Lux Discovery 4

This was not galvanised as far as I can tell, just painted black. The new one will get some extra treatment. 2014 5.0 Supercharged Autobiography & 2015 3.0SDV6 HSE Lux Discovery 4

The one piece pipes should go in OK if side steps are removed, tank cover, rear wheel and a reasonable clearance below. I put a joint in (protected by tank cover) to overcome this. Check wiki. .

I wouldn't be surprised if they rust from the inside out. I think there is a drier filter on the compressor but i doubt it keeps all the moisture out.

Perhaps it's time to take a look at the drier as well. I will investigate. I seem to recall some good videos on this. 2014 5.0 Supercharged Autobiography & 2015 3.0SDV6 HSE Lux Discovery 4

Yep, dismantling the compressor is a warm, inside, kitchen table job, be prepared to catch all the little silica beads Thumbs Up .

New air receiver fitted. Not too bad really. All the advice from the forum had lowered my expectations. New receiver from Dan fitted and painted with stone chip. Replaced all the nuts and bolts with new and kept the side step off so that I can treat the wheel arch rust.

Here is the delivered item before tone chip treatment next to the old one.

Suspension seems to be working, although it is currently giving me 'lifting slowly' message. Have checked for leaks at the air connection but seems ok, will give it some time to settle as I have only run it for about. 5 mins on the drive since the replacement.
