What's the trick to removing the headlights when the bumper appears to be in the way?

You need to remove the bumper as far as I know. Got - 2017 SDV8 Autobiography in Loire Blue
Had- 2008 TDV8 Vogue SE in Java black
Had - 2007 S/C in Stornoway Grey

Thanks, that confirms what I encountered. Not a good design, much like the aim of the high-beam fill-in lights that I want to change because they point too low compared with the bi-xenons.

i dont think you can adjust the main beam angle... ... - .- -.

I lowered my D4's "possum spotter" fill-in angle by fitting spacer washers under the top 2 mounts holding the bi-xenon assembly to the reflector assembly so hope to fit spacers under the bottom 2 mounts on these. With a HID kit fitted to the D4 the fill-ins became very useful. HIDs in these fill-ins momentarily provide good visibility cresting small rises when they light the road in the distance before again becoming spots on the ground not far in front.

I found a reference to having to remove the bumper in a conversion thread. I'll see if only the bumper's top screws and perhaps the guard liner screws need to be removed to allow the top of the bumper to be pulled out enough to free the headlights.

Is there just the 1 bolt holding the bumper to the wing and how is it accessed? I wasted more time today trying to free the top of the bumper but had to put it back together again with darkness approaching. Its quite frustrating as the headlight seems to almost come out with the bumper in-situ. I'm running out of time to get decent lights working before a necessary open-country night drive next w/e, along with not really having any time to spare fiddling with the car so might have to remove the HIDs to get rid of the glaring spots just in front until I have more time.

Edit: After studying pictures of the brackets and parts diagrams it appears that a 6mm bolt is fitted from the front into the bracket. Now having an idea of what the bracket looks like I'll have a better chance when working blind.

I removed the top tie-rail instead of the bumper although the left headlight was going to need more juggling to extricate it, but I only needed one to investigate anyway. I wasn't able to alter the bi-xenon mount to point the bi-xenon assembly lower, only higher. I bent the globe's locating tab forwards to make the globe point down to cause the beam to point up. A test run tonight will reveal if any adjustments to the tabs are required.

To remove the bumper you first need to remove all the fixings from the front half of the wheel arch liners, you will find a hidden bolt behind them, then remove the grille using a long flat screwdriver to put behind all four lower clips and gently twist to release the lower click fixings. Under the grille are 4 bungs and below them are four large crosshead bolts. Under the lower edge of the bumper, behind the tow eye cover are 8-12 10mm headed bolts holding the underneath of the bumper to the subframe and two more hidden higher up across from the fog lamps...

The bumper can now be “popped off” from the plastic grips beside the headlamps by prising outward. The bumper will then literally fall off!

Thanks Craig. I had a look around with the headlight removed and made a few mental notes. I saw that the screws into the upper bumper bracket were the ones holding the bumper firmly in place and that the bolt into the guard bracket that I thought was through the bumper is used to hold the bracket in place, not the bumper. I had already discovered the others you mentioned. The top tie-rail was quick and simple to remove but not a complete solution. Is good to know that the bumper will easily part company once the necessary screws and bolts are removed.

The bent locating tabs on the HID globes did the job - the lights are excellent now. My guess is that the halogens had to point downwards to be of any use due to not being very bright but the replacement HIDs produced too much light close in front, needing to aim higher. They now work well in all terrain at speeds significantly greater than what is allowed here.

Do you have any pics of the bent locating tabs Graham? I too have HID’s in my FB and agree they are too low!

Old thread I know, but I removed a headlight today on my 2011 Vogue without removing the bumper.

I found that the headlight only sits about 8mm behind the bumper, and you can't lift the lamp over that ridge because the slam panel is in the way.

So I removed the two M8 bolts from the end of the slam panel, and the various M6 bolts along it, and loosened the two front Torx screws holding the bonnet release, and the slam panel was then free enough to flex up enough to get the headlight out.

No force was required on the slam panel, so no chance of bending it, and I didn't need to remove the bolts on the other side from the side I was removing the lamp from.

Easy.
