So like a nutter I jumped in at the deep end and went for a 200 mile drive today (got to do the same on the way back tomorrow)

This is the longest by far I've driven in my week of ownership and I have some strange issues I'm a bit worried about.

Firstly I'm in Wales currently and have been going down some very steep both up and down narrow roads.

First thing I notice squeezing the throttle maybe 3/4 on the incline or decline I notice it was holding the gears for a very long time as in >4K then I was having to slow down so couldn't test further... Is this normal? Or I read somewhere that the trans can over heat on these... I initially thought why would I only see it now but prior to this part for the drive the other 180miles were motorway so I'm guessing if it were that that may cool naturally? I don't know any ideas or is it just normal ?

Secondly I bravely/ stupidly hung my new camera out the window on its neck chain to quickly snap this (not something I make a habit of!) ever since going down a very steep narrow road it's been making that noise looked in tyres nothing obvious - was wondering if you've heard before and if I should worry as I have the same drive to do again to more :'(

Holding the gears is a cooling strategy, and also a hill strategy, it will hold gears both up and down hills if it thinks it will help, sometimes it's a pain, sometimes it helps...

Not sure what you took a picture of as nothing is showing in your post......

I'd seriously think about investing in an IID tool or similar, then you can check the gearbox temp and see if it is excessive, if yours has the original radiator and trans oil cooler then the chances are they will need changing soon... Pete

are your brake shield loose

What's the best way to tell with no tools( I have tools at home obviously) turn the wheels and shake the shield if they are accessible? Sorry for silly questions new to this 4x4 business

the brake shields sit behind the brake disks and are thin metal and circular. If they are loose the can rub again the bake disks as they rotate and cause a chuff chuff sound
use a screw driver and through the gaps is the wheel spokes given them a push. you will know if one is loose and rattling
if thats the issue then great, can be fixed with washers.
if not then ..it does sound that something is rubbing at the same speed as the wheels

If the noise is coming from a rear wheel its possible a handbrake shoe has dislodged from the backing plate in the hub and is rubbing on the hub - had this before and it made a similar chuffing noise Current Fleet:-

Hi guys is this normal? just got my hands through and gave them a shake - the rears are solid all around however bot the fronts at the bottom facing the back of the car it can be shaken see/hear my video above - the rest of the way round the are pretty solid?

Dan - had both front heat shields come loose on my 54 reg - one of them just as I got to the dealer's to ask for a part ex price!

They rust around the bolt heads. Easy fix with washers.

Hi Stuart do the videos indicate that's the problem? I bent them a bit and the noise has gone so I can get home so I think it is or a stone was trapped I imagine

My heat shields had rusted through in the area surrounding all three (or four?) bolt heads, so mine were rattling and clanging all the time the wheel was turning.

Yes, it did sound like the noise in your second video (but not like the noise in your first video) - but it may be that only one bolt head has rusted through on yours?

Sorry to hear of your issues, Dan, and hope you resolve them.

Maybe also check the heat shielding above the exhaust rear box - could be flapping around in the breeze. Long shot, but you never know... The best 4.4 x far
