Help - at Tescos - smoke from bonnet - dead car

I drove my 07 3.6 TDV8 to Tesco's with no issues.

Over tannoy, can owner of RR XXX please come to customer services

Told smoke had been coming from under bonnet, and bad smell

Went to car totally dead, key won't unlock it, open door put ignition key in, won't disengage steering lock

Nothing nada !!

AA on the way - any ideas ??? 2011 Range Rover Vogue SE

Spot on - exactly that - relieved a least not wiring melted

Now to try and recover it 2011 Range Rover Vogue SE

Mine did the same thing - luckily at home on the drive.

I only paid £530 with my local indi - thread here

The 2007 alternators are notoriously fragile - see here

Thanks everyone - I had images of melted looms and all sorts when it was totally dead. Big Cry

Battery read 1.2 volts - so a good short Very Happy Very Happy

Recovered to garage - I'll find out in the morning what it will cost. 2011 Range Rover Vogue SE

Ouch! £500 DIY...Sad

I got lucky with the RAC the other month when my alternator failed on my old RX300. They recovered me the 2 miles home, ordered a new alternator for me (same price I could get it for BTW) and fitted it for free the next day!

Cost to me, just the price of the alternator.

Worth a thought if you haven't sorted it yet and are a member of RAC, don't know about the AA.
