Exactly. Creates the same resistance the heating element creates. The case is a heat sink.

I understand. I have the weakest knowledge of electrical engineering in even the simplest forms. The only lab in physics that I had no grasp of.

A few weeks ago I fitted a BEHR (TI 32 88 ) thermostat to both of my L322, one is a LHD 4.4 V8 NAS spec and the other is a RHD 4.4 V8 Japanese spec with LPG. Behr makes the BMW 740D Thermostat (OEM NUMBER 11512248542 ) and if you look closely at the BEHR (TI 32 88 ), you can see where the BMW mark has been removed to sell as a Behr original part. The BEHR (TI 32 88 ) is a straight swap for original 4.4 V8 thermostat, no extra gaskets or modification needed as some listed on ebay. As this thermostat has a lower temp, there is no need for the heating element which is blanked off, I was concerned about this but everything I have read indicates the lower temp thermostat does not need a heating element to force the thermostat to open. I taped up the old wire leading to the heating element and stored it under the engine cover. No warning lights when running without the heater element hooked up and the engine sounds much happier, hope this helps.

That may have been a BMW part, Behr makes the BMW parts so I was happy to use their part which turned out to be BMW anyway. It worked out cheaper than the e bay mod with no cutting or leaking gaskets as its fits perfectly, for me also peace of mind using a oem part.

That's the one, fits perfectly, all you need to do is tape up the wire to the unused heating element and store it under the engine cover. No dash warning lights.

Just completed the thermostat mod, used the 88 degree Stat. Engine feels much smoother and a little quieter when idling. My thermostat had packed up anyway was taking ages to get upto temperature. Very happy with the mod, and a big thanks to the people that have posted on this thread.

I am definitely thinking of getting this done. Probably will go with the BEHR as as far as I can see is a straight swap, correct?

My question is, I have lpg running, will this affect the automatic switch over from petrol to LPG? to clarify, the lpg won't run when the engine is cold and generally switches to it when the temp gets to the top of the blue.

Should this just work as is, or would something have to be changed?

Cheers
