4.4 tdv8 12MY reluctance to start

anyone else experience this:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EXeDWRvqIEA&feature=youtu.be

and perhaps could shed some light on it.

Vehicle arrived with me 4 Oct, nearly every day I have gone to use it since it has not started as it should. You can hear the SM solenoid click every time the start is attempted. When it fails to start it does not even attempt to turn the SM. There is no dimming of lights, no low battery warnings. If you turn ign off and try again it will eventually fire up after anything between 2 and 22 attempts. It does this sometimes on first start of the day, sometimes, like today it started fine for cold start first thing and then wouldn’t restart after 25min running time. it then took 2 attempts. Its done it 7 days out of the 8 days I have used the vehicle to date. When the vehicle does start it starts strongly with no labouring. When it fails to start there is one audible click and that’s it, no other changes, no dimming of anything, no attempts to turn SM no dash warnings.

in the video it does start once the ign has been put on and then start is attempted this is not always the case, sometimes it starts like that sometimes it doesnt. it has not failed completely to start yet! off on hols!

its got a new battery.

any help appreciated Cheers

James

Who did you buy it from? If it was a dealer then they should sort it out. 2017 4.4 SDV8 Autobiography

I had similar problem with my Td5 and it was starter solenoid. You may tray cleaning el.connection at the starter.

Hi James

I have experienced a non-starting issue very similar to yours on several occasions.

I put it down to the battery needing charging up, and having done this the problem seems to resolve itself for a while (and then I charge the battery again).

These models seem to have the "efficient charging system" or whatever its called, whereby the alternator only charges the battery when it needs to apparently.

I do a lot of very short journeys to work - only 10 minutes each way - and so feel that the battery isn't getting the required charge.

I may well be wrong, and perhaps someone on here with far more knowledge than myself may correct me.

Let us all know if the issue gets resolved. Thumbs Up

its going in tue to be looked at by dealer.

we had 36 fails to start on Monday after heavy rain overnight and 12 fails on Tue am again after some Rain.

Wed, no rain, started straight away!

i am confident battery is good with the replacement thats been fitted.

SM or similar are my thoughts. Cheers

James

James, I had this same problem on my 2011 tdv8 when I was a year old. Dealer fitted a ew starter motor at that time and I had no further problems for the next 2 years which I had the car. I believe it is a known fault and has been raised on here in the past. Agueroooooooooo. 93-20
I swear you will never see anything like this ever again....watch it..drink it in.

thats nice to hear, well sort of! i am hoping that it will replicate the fault at the dealers and they can find the problem if ^^is the case then it should be easier to convince them there is a problem if it doesn't actually replicate it when they have it.

thank you Cheers

James

Likewise, a new starter under warranty. Annoying when it won't start when you're about to drive off the Eurotunnel though.

Update: new starter motor. Apparently fully covered labour and parts money wise.
Nice to hear.
Would love to know if the new one lasts linger than 4 years and 68000 kilometers
