United Kingdom 2004 Range Rover Vogue 4.4 V8 Bonatti Grey

Hello nicksaab
Hope all is well in Wales and on the M4. I haven’t been on the forum for a while. How is the AB LE? And how many miles are you up to now? My 2004 V8 L322 is now up to 205,500.

Huge thanks for your July 2001 post with the recommendation of changing the servotronic valve. Mine was serviced this week and I had that done. I didn’t think there was a lot wrong with the steering on mine, but jeepers nelly, it feels like a different (new) car for having it done. Thanks for passing on that tip.

In less exciting news, mine is going to have to go back to the bodyshop for some tlc. The rust in the wheel arches that I had sorted out 4 years ago is back. Hey ho. 2004 L322 4.4 V8 Vogue Bonatti Grey

2016 Range Rover Vogue SE SDV8 Corris Grey

Hey Tom - not so great news unfortunately, after sorting out a height sensor - the first one I've had to do in 105k(!) the front airbag then failed a couple of days later and she is parked up in the top yard waiting time to do it. I have a feeling though this is probably it - the rust on my rear arches is pretty bad and there still seems to be a fairly hefty oil leak somewhere at the front.

Having switched to using rental cars for the M4 runs, and just replaced the old farm pickup truck with a new Ford Ranger - I think once a replacement L405 arrives (not till new year I'm thinking now) then I think she will be retired for good and just be used on the farm for moving trailers around . Sad times, but she has done me well ! Current Fleet:-
2018 Discovery 5 3.0 HSE
2021 Ford Ranger Wildtrack
2019 Ford Mustang Bullitt 5.0 V8
1993 Defender 90 200TDI Pickup

Thanks for the update Nick. The most important thing is that you still have it. These older Range Rovers seem to have a way of avoiding the end.

When we thought the torque converter had gone in my L322 V8, SWMBO in our house said that it and my noisy BMW that used to wake her up at 5:30am both had to go. To be replaced by one “sensible” car. The noisy BMW sold straight away to a mate. The L322 was booked in with We Buy Any Car. An 18 month old ML350 arrived. On the day the L322 had to go to WBAC, i felt like I was about to take my dog to the vet for the last time, so I said to SWMBO “I can’t take it, you take it” and gave her the key. Then she gave me the key back and said “I can’t make you take it!”. So it went in to storage. 9 months later the family were unanimous- 18 month old ML350 wasn’t a patch on an 18 year old Range Rover. So off went the ML350 and back came the L322 (I’ll gloss over after two gearbox rebuilds…..and a subsequent prop shaft centre bearing replacement).

So the key thing is you still have it. There’s no rush to get it back on the road. Never say never!

Good luck with the search for your L405 in 2022. And if the moderators allow, do give us the odd update on the blue oval fleet.

Finally, how is your old enough to know better ace mechanic? Fully recovered from his mountain bike crash?

All the very best

Hi Nick, great post! I see you're based near Newcastle Emlyn. I live in the area and am looking for a good indie LR mechanic for MY12 Vogue. Can you recommend anyone?

So I guess now is the time to wrap this thread up - hadn't appreciated how long its been since I last updated and thanks for all the messages!

The 04 AB LE finally went to the big Landrover factory in the sky - well actually its a Range Rover breakers yard in the mountains near Aberystwyth - it was just sat in the yard with its arse in the air (frnot airbag blown) growing algae and leaking oil. It was a sad day but it lives on - I drove past the place the other day on a test drive of a new Range Rover Sport and its sat there and you can see it on the videos in the photo and media section.

The VSE never got replaced - prices still a bit mad. I was running rental cars most of last year but around the summer it became more and more challenging to source them at the right time in the right location due to the ongoing supply issues that even the rental car companies were having. I kept shopping for a replacement L405 but nothing that came up was sensibly priced or floated my boat.
In the end I bought a 2018 Discovery 5 TD6 which I am really happy with. I enjoyed the one i had during lockdown as a Landrover Assistance courtesy car and whilst it isn't as luxurious or as fast as the VSE its comfortable and safe. Having bought a new Ford Ranger Wildtrak last year and still running the absolutely gorgeous and quick Mustang Bullitt I think I've ended up with a pretty good selection of cars. I expect in 18 months time I Will be back in a L405 but you never know.
