So I attempted to fix my dodgy fuel gauge this week - When I fill full after a while it will suddenly start reading 1/4 full ! Bit of a shock the first time it happens about a couple of weeks after purchase. I thought Censored these things really guzzle am going to have to start extending the mortgage ! Then a few click on here and I relaxed a bit.

Definitely just cut the carpet under both brackets - much quicker.



You will need a 10mm socket/spanner to remove the cover plate ( I just removed the drivers side round plate )
This is what you will see (Vogue TDV8 2011). Use a rachet strap on to the front seats to hold back the carpet and insulation.



I used a hammer and flat head screwdriver to remove large round lid ring (tapping at an angle) n.b. Loosey lefty.
Here is what you see. The black clip is half way down the pipe/ wire loom leading to the pump.





This is the culprit



I used a crockspanner to hold the wires up so I could perform the operation.



New connectors installed. When I put this back I cable tied it to the rest of the loom leading to the pump which is situated at the bottom of the tank.



Not much mess from diesel when removing the main hose fittings and top housing. It helped covering everything with chopped up black bin liners and lots of gaffer.
The job took me about and hour start to finish.

Similar to mine only I stopped before venturing down the loom to find ther plug

Are you able to report it fixdd the issue completely..? I may well get out andf do this last step..!!

Update - As it was bugging me, I nipped out at lunch time and did this fix - took about 45 minutes but that included me having to fish for the black wire after I had cut it but before I had chance to connect it up again..!

Would have been ok but I only put £95 deisel in ther last week and only driven 26 miles on a full tank.... To say it was high was an understatement.

All done now though so fingers crossed.!

Got here after suffering from "Fuel Empty" message and guage dropped to empty (I only filled her up last week). First thing came to my mind was a stuck float so stopped at the garage to fill her up.. still no luck.

Searched the issue on the forum and landed here which put my mind at rest as some good examples and well explained steps have gave me the courage to do the fix.

Few questions:

1- do I need to wait until the fuel level is less than half or quarter?
2- do I need to replace the connectors at both sides?
3- do these wires float in diesel or are they protected?
4- where do you get the connectors? And what type?

Please advise Current:
- L560 Velar HSE R-Dynamic D180
- Peugeot 508 2011 - 2.2 HDi GT

Past:
- FFRR V 2010 - 3.6 TDV8
- Citroen C4 1.6i Petrol
- Mitsubishi Shogun 3.2 DID
- Peugeot 607 2.2 HDi

The less fuel the less mess you're likely to make. I had my arms deep inside the tank. I guess it would be doable with more fuel but less pleasant!

2- do I need to replace the connectors at both sides?
Not necessarily but you may as well ah if ones gone it's probably only a matter of time.

3- do these wires float in diesel or are they protected?
Don't think they float. They just sit in the diesel.

4- where do you get the connectors? And what type?
I didn't even try and replace I just soldered them together. But IIRC you can just cut off the old connectors and replace them with an alternative. 2016 Skoda Octavia VRS Estate

Thanks Mike.. gonna drive about to a) allow the fuel level to go down and b) the weather to get better.

Goes without saying but I assumed you soldered on the bench? I dont plan to take it all out so don't think soldering would be an option if I am looking to do in situ due to being so close to diesel. Current:

It’s doable with a full tank but you might get diesel hands if it’s too full - the work can be done in the wires outside the tanks but be careful not to pull too much. You are basically looking to cut the black plug off and connect the wires directly (black to black and blue to blue)

I used an inline crimped connector but any will work. The wires are very thin so I guess it’s resistance voltage only and tou only need small connectors - they will just sit in the tank if diesel anyway. Ash

OK, had a go at it today.. took just over 2 hours as I took the pump out and soldered instead of crimps (as per Mike's advice) finishing it nicely on the work bench.

I got hold of the bulletin in English which was quiet handy (will upload it when I am on my laptop)

1- I emptied the tank with a siphon pump, had about 55 litres in. (Glad I did this as it was less messy)
2- undid the passenger side first
3- then undid the driver side (the spring on the pump fell in the tank as the plastic at the top had a cracked (no problem, all sorted with glue)
4- cut the black plug for the blue and black wire at both the pump end and the passenger side sender end.
5- as the bars for the springs pushed into the pump, I opened it up and cleaned the mesh (was not too bad for 10 year old tank and pump opened for the first time)
6- soldered and heat shrinked nicely,
7- checked the resistance on both sides (mine was 56 ohms at empty and 1000 ohms at full). Sweet, we are now ready to put everything back in
7- start with inserting the pump first, then the passenger side sender

All done, guage now working.. (thanks to the clear guidance and advice here)

Here's a link to the TSB for the job.

It refers to up to three connections. When I did mine I took both the units out but cannot remeber if it is necessary to remove both to do the TSB. The reason for removing both was the main pump "bridge" holding the unit in had failed allowing the two pillars to drop into the unit and the pump fell over. I took both out and repaired the bridge and checked the secondary unit at the time as well as doing the TSB

Doesn't need to as long as you can identify which side needs done.. my view was I'm there.. May as well do both to avoid any issues Current:
