So what’s this then?

Hi everyone.. I’m a newbie to the site, and was after a bit of advice.. I have just brought my first Range Rover (a 2010 4.4tdV8 Autobiography Very Happy ) and am still in that WTF is this phase.. So I was just underneath the car today taking off the Side Steps that came with the car when I noticed a long (rusty Big Cry) cylinder sat up in the floor pan, right along the driver side sill. Can anyone tell me what it is? And also if it is expensive to replace because it felt very rusty!! Thanks for any advice.

Some have replaced them, but they are a pressure vessel, so if it’s not leaking and the suspension is working then a quick clean up and repaint should suffice. There is nothing that can't be fixed with a hammer😜😜

Thanks Dr Rob.. it’s just that as I was spannering off the side steps I kept brushing against it and it felt like paper mashe!!!.. I just remember having an MGB GTV8 a few years ago that had stainless sill guards.. when I took those off the lower body underneath felt the same and was rusted through. Big Cry But I guess if it’s a pressure vessel (and the air sus is working fine) then it must be sound.. just couldn’t work out what it was.. as you say.. don’t fiddle.. Very Happy

Ah, another nearby. Any chance of organising a working meet where us new FFRR owners can get some assistance in the little jobs we all should be doing, like sill and rear wheel arch protection?

I change LOTS of them that rust through and cause brake downs! Early early cars had aluminium tanks and then JLR decided to change them to steel! So, the moral of the story is... If it feels REALLY REALLY rusty then change it before it leaves you stranded sir Thumbs Up

Working under a vehicle, especially with rust particles flying around - ALWAYS use eye protection.

The below link will give you and idea of what is entailed, it can be a bit fiddly but doable at home. Thumbs Up

Not the best video, but it will give you a good idea.

I did mine on the drive. Wasn't too bad though I recall being a bit confused by whatever set of instructions I was following. There is high-pressure air involved so make sure you de-pressurise the reservoir safely (I used my IID Tool) and make sure you support the vehicle on axle stands securely. Access to a couple of the bolts was a little tricky IIRC but overall it's a pretty straightforward job. 2016 Skoda Octavia VRS Estate
