Anybody changed a track rod end??

I've had knocking noise now for a few weeks from the drivers side front.

Took the car into the dealers today and they said my track rod end was loose and needed replacing. Quoted £250 to replace and do tracking (£70 parts, £135 labour +VAT)

Anybody changed one of these DIY?

Sure have. Easier with a splitter (can be hired) and I would do all the steering work before taking it to have the tracking done. Check all the joints and bushes and replace anything which isn't looking the best.

Back off the lock nut, Tie some string around the thread where the TR End stops, replace and screw on back up to string. remove string and tighten lock nut. Bodge tape is an alternative. Not perfect but it won't scrub out your tyres on the trip to get the tracking done.

Given that it's 4 wheel alignment on these I'd do the back end as well.

Very easy just count number of turns to unscrew and fit new one back on same amount
Steering wheel should still be in centre after road test if not screw in or out as required until it is in the centre
That will do until you can get the alignment done professonally Thumbs Up

Thanks chaps....sounds like an easy job so will attempt it this weekend.

BTW - is it worth doing both sides even though it's not worn??

Unless you live a couple thousand miles from the nearest alignment shop, the eyeball or '3andsumpinfinger' method will suffice too Very Happy
