A gearbox oil change is not included in the Land Rover Service Schedule - according to them it's sealed for life.
It's "only" the gearbox designer / manufacturer who recommend oil changes ! Paul,

I should have said get all ecu fault codes read by someone & be sure the gearbox is working generslly ok before organising the oil change.
You don't want to waste a few hundred pounds only to discover there are bigger & more expensive isdues thst to fix will involve chsnging the oil again! Paul,

I am purchasing an IID tool off of Dan, will that be of any use to check for Gearbox codes.

The Gearbox is working fine I thought it was more of a preventative measure to change the oil

Top Tips for Transmission Oil Change on ZF 6HP26



1. Just after you start the car to warm up the oil, turn off the air conditioning, otherwise you will get dripped on with cold water throughout the exercise

2. Get yourself a decent oil pump. I got the one from Halfords, the cap fits perfectly on the Lifeguard bottles, saving having to decant, and makes getting the new oil in so much easier



3. Always check that the filler plug will come loose before you start any draining down operations






4. Always use am M6 1.0 tap to recut/clean the threads for the pan bolts, and test with a bolt before fitting the pan. If any are tight, recut again until easy (learnt the hard way, had a tight one, thought I would force it on, and the bolt sheared! Fortunately (?) it was in a position where I could drill it out and retap the the thread.



5. Use only ZF Lifeguard 6 Oil

6. If using a new metal pan with separate filter, use some gasket sealant on both sides of the gasket. The gasket is not thick enough to cope with any variation in the pan / bottom of gearbox. or spend extra dosh on getting a new plastic Filtran one, with the built-in rubber gasket. Again I found out the hard way, the new pan leaked in two places, wasting 4 litres of precious ZF Lifeguard

7. Do spread out oil spillage sheets/clothes etc. Guaranteed you won't get the old pan off without spilling something

8. If you are changing the mechatronic valve sleeve, it will only go in one way. There is a slot inside the sleeve, and a corresponding notch in the connector. This is at 6 o'clock. You should be able to feel it line up as you turn the new sleeve in the housing. You may need to apply some not insignificant pressure with a flat lever to get the new sleeve to go all the way home.



9. Do follow the instructions in the attached pdf from ZF.

10. If you need to stop the engine during filling for any reason (e.g. let oil cool down) replace the filler plug first, otherwise all your hard work will just come pouring out of the filler plug!

11. If you are doing the work outside, and it is a bit windy, grab a old 2 litre coke bottle, almost cut the bottom off about 2 inches up, make a hole in the flap to hand a screwdriver or other heavy thing, dangle this over the subframe to catch the dribbles

My gearbox oil change was not without its trials and tribulations. 4.7 litres out, and, eventually, 5.5 litres back in !

Metal oil pan leaked first time around, so sorted that with some gasket sealant.

Draining down again after putting in 4 litres of Lifeguard produced some very dirty oil.

Sheared a pan bolt, had to drill out, luckily in a place I could.

The mechatronic valve sleeve is not in the easiest place to get to.

The old oil stinks to high heaven of burnt butter and peanuts Shocked Try not to get it on you or your clothes, otherwise the smell follows you around.

Did find the handy ZF Gearbox Service Routines pdf (see post above) along the way, good, easy, sensible flowcharts.

Hopefully won't be doing it again, but may be tempted to change the oil again in a few months.... .

Is the mechatronic valve sleeve something to do as std or did you replace it as prevention or becuase of an issue? Current 2007 TDV8 Vogue Buckingham Blue

No issue, no leaks, probably didn't need doing....the one in there was fine, nothing as bad as the one in RRPhil's picture

However, if you have the pan off, this is your chance to pull the white locking mechanism out and swap for a new one, £10 from Duckworths. Peace of mind... .

The mechatronic sleeve only seems to leak after the car has been stood unused for three or four days. If you use the car regularly you may never notice or care. I guess that's because the oil gradually moves from the torque converter to the sump over an extended period, eventually filling it to the level of the sleeve.

I'm surprised you only got 4.7 litres out initially .
As I mentioned in the OP, I managed to get 6.5 litres out after getting th transmission upto about 70C with a quick drive. I did leave it to drain a while too.
Was your transmission hot when you started? Paul,

I drained with the oil temp at @ 40 degrees

Difficult without knowing the history, had the oil been changed previously and not quite been done properly (e.g. not run through the gears). It was the original filter/pan on the car, so if oil had never been changed, some loss somewhere... or I spilt more than I thought when lowering the pan (but not litres!). The box does keep on giving though, when I left it overnight with a pan on, but drained, got another 1/2 litre or so as it slowly dripped and drained.

However, following the ZF procedure I got 5.5 back in. Will probably check in a week or 2, and have a chance to assess behaviour of the box over the next few days .
