What activates cross link valves

Been reading a few bits and bobs relating to the suspension and there is mention of the cross link valves activating when in “Offroad mode”.

What is meant by Offroad mode? Does this mean just any terrain response mode, or does the tin brain sense the Rangie is offroad somehow?
