I've read that before, but to be completely honest I really don't understand where this comes from. I assume you don't have one in your RR or you wouldn't have a TomTom? Is your experience first hand then?

I've lived with the RR/BMW system for a while now - as well as having experienced numerous other systems in MB, BMW, VW, and Porsche for shorter/longer periods. I've also used a TomTom and a Garmin quite extensively. There are a couple of items to critique on the RR/BMW unit: no touch screen makes entries cumbersome and the menus are sometimes less than intuitive. That said, I was not more impressed with my TomTom in this regard either, tho. And I read somewhere that someone thought the routes one nav picked were better than another - that's a load of crock IMO. They did not know how to use the route options or had different versions of map material.

It is more expensive, but it integrates into the vehicle in every respect. And I don't have this

I much prefer the Mk4 nav to tom-tom/garmin/navman. Purely for its 100% reliability and accuracy where I have found the aforementioned 3 troublesome.

Do you still have the mk3? 

the biggest advantage of a built in dash unit is that you dont have to put it away after each stop and bring it out of the glovebox when you start.... ... - .- -.

yea, still got the mk3 so keep my tom tom in the glove box for when its doing my head in.

i have tom tom but i still would like a navigation system in the car not just for the sat nav but for the screen as its a dam site better looking than that thing i got........im still not selling it to buy a Vogue dan ,,,lol......also does anyone know if i definatly have to change the amp

I think the amp takes the input from the nav, to direct sound to the front speakers. Nav has always been put in a car with hi-line sound.

But probably be best to take a look at the wiring diagram to be sure?

Yes you do. You have the amp/radio up front at the moment. The in-dash unit is actually 2 pieces: the radio/amp/cd and the MID MultiInformationDisplay. The amp/radio/cd will not work with the nav. I tried.

Nav can be run w/o an extra amp. The radio unit has a built in amp - the sound will be exactly as it is now (which wasn't even soo terrible, I thought. I've had to live with much worse). The wiring diagrams are of no use in this case - wiring is the same. It's a software issue between the amp/radio/cd, satnav display, and nav computer.

Gave you a list of the bare minimum you need above.

Dont get me wrong i like having a sat nav built in and it does its job in most cases but just nice to have my tom tom in the glove box for back up. Have used the tom tom twice in 6 months one as above and the other a hotel, once again all i had was hotel name, road and postcode, no building number.

But 1400 quid thats gotta be 10%+ of what the cars worth so i agree with others buy a vogue or get a tom tom for the glove box....  2004 black Vogue TD6

i really like my touch screen and it works very well, but like you ,when i go on long journeys where i dont know the area , i to put my tomtom in the glovebox, simply as a back up.. ... - .- -.

Actually 1400 is a very good deal. Buying the pieces individually used costs easily that - and you've still got no loom. And it all depends on how much you've paid for the car/what you want. An inexpensive RR with a nav upgrade can still be better than a moderately priced RR with nav already installed. I know people who spend considerably more on chintzy multimedia w/o nav...

i notice it has an analogue tv tuner , might be better finding a unit with digital..also you'll find the sat nav a bit slow to boot up as it has to work on the win ce software.. ... - .- -.
