Me again, might as well ask this too since I seem to be on a bit of a roll

Recently the ash tray has started popping open, and takes a few goes to make it stay closed.

Is this a common thing, and is there a fix for it ?

I am guessing it means removing the centre console top. Are there details of how to do this ?

Nope, never have.

The previous owner used to keep his loose change in it, so it probably got used a lot.

John there's a powerful UK video on console removal I saw a while back, can't find it but they do have over 200 L322 vhow to videos. It's the one where Cam-Tech-Craig's car is being done.

Thanks for the info, it was just what I needed.
I went and had a look whilst the wife prepared dinner. It's an easy fix.

Notes to accompany the video above:
If you have ipod/ power sockets inside the arm rest, you need to pull these out and unplug them before the liner will come out.
The ipod socket doesn't come straight out, it needs to be popped out from the bottom first.

Strictly speaking you don't need to remove the unit. You can do this with it just lifted up and propped up with a towel. That means no need to unplug the terrain or gear selector unit.

Once the rear of the unit is lifted up you can see the mechanism on the passenger side.
There is a metal pin pushed into an arm that works with the latch.
On mine this pin was protruding by a couple of mm, which meant it wasn't fully pushed in.
By simply pushing it in with the key it now works as expected.
