I had the same problem with my 2015 SDV8 and ended up having a new sensor fitted under warranty, apparently it is a 10 hour job that Land Rover book time only allows 5 hours for !

I think I didn't follow the steps of having the engine hot and then waiting 15 minutes and being sure I'm on level ground. It's a lot easier with my son's Corsa.

I'll have another go when I nest use in a day or two.

There's a big development with this issue.

Landrover Assistance (AA) came out yesterday and confirmed that the oil level sensor was faulty and would need to be replaced. They arranged a hire car for me with Enterprise (F Pace) and Inchcape Preston now have the car. They have confirmed the diagnosis and got approval from Car Care to fix it under warranty, should be back on Tuesday.

However, ........

I realised that dropping the sump meant new oil and as the car is only 2 months from needing a service I asked if they would do the other service items and charge me for the service minus the oil and filter but they said, no, that's not possible. This means that if I ask them to service the car whilst they have it they will put new oil in and then drop it out immediately?? It all seems a bit bonkers and inflexible.

Does anyone know if they would normally fit a new oil filter when replacing the oil level; sensor?

All done, Inchcape replaced the sensor under warranty and I got the vehicle back this morning.

I can now check the oil level.

I can now, it showed something like "Oil level OK". A bit of an anti-climax really after all the hassle, I thought it might have been flashing or singing or something.

On Saturday we will take the ferry from Hull to Rotterdam and on Sunday we drive from Rotterdam to Gdansk, 13 hours plus stops and traffic. That's what triggered this whole oil level saga, I was being very diligent checking it a week before the trip but good that I did. At least it's perfect timing for an oil change.

Thumbs Up

Is this a common fault? I think mine is playing up? Can it only be diagnosed with a plug in?

United Kingdom 2013 Range Rover Vogue SDV8 Santorini Black

It is becoming a more common fault. I've the same issue, though without the advantage of warranty to pay for the fix.

I've looked into doing the job myself and have bought the parts [sensor, wiring loom, clamp and sump gasket] which come to about £115. The issue is the 10-hours required to do the job. LR quote 7 hours, but I've heard that this is only because of the shock of the cost to change a simple sensor. The job is horrible and involves removing drive shafts, removing diff and dropping the sub-frame to get to the bolts on the sump. The sub-frame bolts can also have problems coming out due to corrosion and can break.

I've changed the oil and the level was correct [something like 7.2litres] so I don't believe I'm using oil, so it's not a top priority. Current options are:
- Change the sensor myself [can't face it at the moment]
- Pay someone to do it for me [I've had a quote for £650 including vat, plus the parts which I've already got]
- Developing a canister to hold the sensor at the side of the engine [difficult to work out the height required]
- Using piano wire [guitar wire isn't long enough] down the oil suction tube to act as a dipstick [yes, wire does go down there and around the bends]
- replacing the oil suction tube with a dipstick [just bought a used D3 dipstick for £20]

I will let the forum know when I've found a solution. Current:
- 2013 L405 4.4 TDV8 Vogue
Sold:
- 2004 L322 4.4 Vogue (BRC LPG)
- 2002 L322 4.4 HSE (having fixed timing chain guides)
- 2000 P38 4.6 Vogue (BRC LPG)
- 1981 2-door In-Vogue
- 1980 Ex-Army SIII LWB
- 1976 SIII LWB
- 1968 SIIA
Stripped for parts:
- 2003 L322 4.4 Vogue
