Now I know there are many top IT guys out there and I am hoping to get a little advice.

Our house is an unusual shape consisting of a central portion and two wings that head north to the west of the house and south at the east creating a sort of S or Z shape. My office is located on the top floor in one of the wings and the sitting room on the bottom floor of the other so they are about 60-70 feet apart.

The high Speed Broadband supplied by Virgin is routed by cable to my office where it is broadcast via a Belkin N Wireless Router. The signal in most of the rooms is fine but in the North wing its rubbish making using a tablet in the sitting room impossible.

I believe it is possible to boost the signal using a second router (or other device) and am hoping for a "Simple" answer that is relevant to a home office set-up and not an office building! Any assistance given will be greatly appreciated.

Personally I would look at running a cat5 cable to the other side of the house, possibly in the roof space?

Then what you want is an "access point" rather than another router. Then your devices can hop on and off of the router/AP seamlessly. 

Ironically the cable enters the house in the living room behind the TV then attaches to Modem before it then exits again out the wall and all around the walls/roof to my office where it enters again!

Can this Virgin/NTL cable be split to run a router/AP in the living Room then carry on to my office? If yes how and with what?

No you cant split their cable.

In our house we ran a cat5 cable round the outside to get from one side to the other as the walls and floor are stone so no where to run the cable. 

Sceptically tried powerline here as draytek router not covering house.....better coverage across whole house, even garage & workshop block which is detached!!

All for about £40 at the time

Also use a powerline in my house. Could stick an access point on the end if you want wireless.

you can now use 200MPS over your electrical circuit and will cover up to 6KM of wiring and repeat your wifi ( 6KM is an average 6 bedroom property ) they work out of the box and you can lock the security down takes 2 mins from opening box to being up and running Far to many gone...

I have Googled "Powerline" and there are tons of products can you guys recommend one please?

Netgear make reliable units for home / home office use and work with all major router wifi units. Try to stick with later N series.

If you want to go further upmarket look at a Draytek solution but better to have Draytek router in place as well on the upside with say a 2820VN this will give you dedicated VOIP lines and a very robust firewall good for small to medium bness office use.

If you are not IT literate then Draytek units may be a little more difficult to get the best out of them Far to many gone...

I have a similar shape/size property in an old barn, with the router in one corner where my office is

I use Netgear powerline adapters with wireless built in to reach the extremities, so effectively have 3 wireless access points covering the whole place...as well ast cat 5e gigabit from the office to my AV rack, but thats because I stream media over that

you want a kit like this (powerline, + powerline with wireless)

so you plug one near your virgin router and connect up, then plug the other where you want wireless coverage at other end of the house ...add as many as you like where you have free plug sockets of course

not cheap, and not as fast as a cable, but works well cheers
