United Kingdom 2013 Range Rover Vogue SE SDV8 Santorini Black

One of the papers photographed is the reg transfer so certainly not the original

One of the MOT's has 1972 written on it

This is almost certainly the right answer IMHO

So my best guess is it's an early 4 door everything with a 2 door reg number and possibly vin tag, if it's got a chassis number I'd bet on it not matching, in fact I wouldn't be surprised if it didn't turn out to be a ringer.... Shocked

IIRC the VIN tag was just pop riveted to the chassis on these..... and as you can get replacement chassis, it's always an interesting question of how much you can replace/restore without needing a Q reg.

I used to have an old trial machine that was based on a 100" RR chassis with a LR lightweight body on top - was still registered as a RR even though it looked like a LR

Front quarter windows were dropped for MY85 along with the introduction of fully-welded body seams. The front doors are at least Sept 84 build MY85.

It wasn’t uncommon for Company Directors to reshell an early RR chassis in the 80’s to reduce the Benefit in Kind payable as it was based on the original retail price until HMRC cottoned on and closed the loophole. So that may explain it.

Advert has been updated to say that he has now got it running.

I think someone should send him a message on eBay and ask but I recon it's a reshell as already mentioned.

I think that you need to retain the original bulkhead, and some of the drive train... if memory serves me right they have a points scoring scheme that you have get a certain score to retain the old reg. This has obviously had a private plate added at some stage in the past which probably where the confusion started to arise.. Yesterday I couldn't spell Engineer... Today I are one!

I had an '83 which had different door mirrors and quarter windows.

The interior looks like my '86 model. Ron B. VK2OTC

Found it!!......... My head hurts..... .gov.uk is short for torture!!

Keep the original registration number
Your vehicle must have 8 or more points from the table below if you want to keep the original registration number. 5 of these points must come from having the original or new and unmodified chassis, monocoque bodyshell or frame.

Part Points
Chassis, monocoque bodyshell (body and chassis as one unit) or frame - original or new and unmodified (direct from manufacturer) 5
Suspension (front and back) - original 2
Axles (both) - original 2
Transmission - original 2
Steering assembly - original 2
Engine - original 1

So out of a total of 14 points how many does it score??

Transmission has been changed, so that's -2
Not too sure about the shell, think you'd be ok there, provided that the chassis is the original 1972... But if it's got a bolted in gearbox crossmember you'd be up the creak as you'd only score 7 Yesterday I couldn't spell Engineer... Today I are one!

Well spotted that man Thumbs Up

They dropped the quarter lights in 1984 and the external door hinges in 1986.... so that sort of narrows down it's age to mid 84 to mid 86.. Yesterday I couldn't spell Engineer... Today I are one!

The original 70's Range Rover had completely different panels & Doors & Latches and EVERYTHING that is definitely an 80's car.

I agree - its possible that it's had a new body put on the old chassis, but far more likely the VIN plate was just moved to a newer vehicle

Whether that new car was purchased legally or obtained in some other way, you will never know, but ringing was rife with the older LR & RR models......

Looking at it the exterior look like it’s an 86/87. The indicators, door mirrors, door locks within door handles and hinges and interiors door cards are 86 ish. With the shape of exhaust pipes, that says it could be a 3.5 EFI engine, but on the dash on drivers side looks like it’s has a choke pull, like on carburettor engines.

The door rubbing strips are 86 but neither front wings have any?????

Looks like the front passenger door has been replaced (slightly different colour plus not got rubbing strip on)

Interior dash is defo 86 onwards but the centre console with locking lid is defo from 83/84 time.

Short gear lever and diff lock/low range stick in front of gear lever is more 86 time, as I thought the low range stick was behind the longer main gear lever in 84. Although hand brake was lower on transmission tunnel on 84, was lifted up to console area on 86 models and later. But not with that cubby lid though.

Odd wheel back passenger side too.

Just my 2p’s worth

The number plate is worth £400, so the RR project is ‘only’ £2600.
