Overrevving ‘run a way’ TDV8 then engine died

Was driving yesterday up and down hills in the Yorkshire Dales. Was going up a steep 25% hill and engine revved flat out with no foot on the accelerator for 20 ish seconds. Tried to stop with button but would not stop. Finally stopped with red engine error light.

Tried to restart but turns over slowly and will not fire. RAC recovering. Checked oil level 100% took off air box lid and no oil visible.

Ideas?

What did the RAC diagnose? There must be more info i.e. engine fault codes or noises?

They just sent out recovery truck.
I spoke to senior tech from my local dealer who said engine would not do this without something feeding the engine, really scary as was flat out.
Issue with getting into N to get onto truck.
Engine yellow warning light on.
No big bang or oil over road. Engine only turning over slowly and not firing

When you say airbox, what are you describing the airfilter? if so my guess is turbo failed, oil ingested, engine wrecked. - Sorry. BMW i3 Electric Car

Describing the square removable box on top of engine.

Are you saying total engine wrecked or turbo?

Sadly wrecked engine and turbo although if the plenum was dry of oil I dont quite see where it could have been getting the oil to run on so I may be wrong.

The fact that it revved flat out, probably beyond the max rpm, would suggest it was running on engine oil. When it stops it stops because of over revving or as it consumes the oil it eventually seizes.

Was there a lot of smoke whilst it was revving? I have seen this happen 4 times now and every time theres a lot of smoke, maybe the strong winds blew it away though?

The fact that it will only turnover slowly also suggests it seized too.

I feel your pain. BMW i3 Electric Car

Very sorry to hear, hope you have a warranty.

There was a (slightly odd) report here of a 4.4TDV8 on a 2010-11. I can't find it but the member talked about overrunning (is that what it's called?)

It was from a new member and the group here was asking for more info. The consensus ended up agreeing that the member's mechanic was actually referring to the Turbo Drain Mod which doesn't end up with the engine 'running away'.

That member never got back on the thread and we seemed to think their mechanic was being alarmist.

But it was a similar description to yours. Will have another look for it.

. Cheers, Greg

My wife says there was lots of smoke. Anyone got indication on cost of new engine?

Sadly no warranty

I flicked through and couldn't see a price. You could PM him.

I feel for you. Big Cry Big Cry Big Cry Big Cry

Your 2014 holds a significant value, much more so than a 2011.

A 2011 would cost the same to re-engine as yours, but worth a lot less in value. I'm just thinking worst case if you do need a new engine, your overall value may support the cost of the engine if you see what I mean. Not saying it won't be a hard hit on your bank balance.

Keep us posted.
. Cheers, Greg

The large bang happens when the revs are too high and something lets go (usually a con rod) which punches a hole in the block. If it seizes up the revs gradually fall to an abrupt stop. I tried to help a lady with a Mondeo that was running away (you block the air intake if possible), just as we got the bonnet open a lump of engine flew past my head and smashed the rear window of my Audi.
Definitely wont be attempting to stop any runaways in future.
If there was a lot of smoke I would be 99% sure your engine will be toast, not great news I know but it really is sounding more and more like run away caused by ingesting engine oil. BMW i3 Electric Car

I had not heard about “engine run a way’ before. I certainly expected more than 4 years and 60k miles for a £115k car!

Has anyone else experienced this?

Diesel engine runaway is a rare condition affecting diesel engines, in which the engine draws extra fuel from an unintended source and overspeeds at higher and higher RPM and producing up to 10 times the engine's rated output until destroyed by mechanical failure or bearing seizure through lack of lubrication.
