blind spot retrofit

Hi all, does anyone know if the blind spot monitoring system can be retrofitted?
as far as i know i would need the mirror assembly and the sensors that go in the rear quarters, that seems easy if that's all there is, is all the wiring already there? if not then it may well turn into a pita but i am guessing it is
its a feature i think may be worth its weight in gold given the way some Censored heads drive, Censored me off to no end

rant over

anyway anyone done this? or am i setting myself up for a load of grief?

all comments welcome please 2011 4.4 tdv8 autobiography black

You did ask for all comments !

From Land Rover website....
The blind spot monitor system is a supplement to, not a replacement for, a safe driving style and use of the door mirrors and rear-view mirror. The system may not function under all speeds, weather, and road conditions. Drive safely at all times and use the door mirrors and rear view mirror to avoid accidents.

Waste of money IMHO, easier to keep a eye on your mirrors Thumbs Up

let me be clear here, i do not think that systems like this should make the driver complacent or to otherwise replace the drivers responsibility, surely these systems are there for the ones you don't see.
lets face it a drivers main concentration is forward not behind, how many times have we gone to pull out to overtake only to find a car in our blind spot?, its happened to me on several occasions and i dare say it has scared the bejesus out ot the driver behind, its not that i didn't look or wasn't paying attention the car was in my blind spot, these systems "look" behind 100% of the time something that is impossible for a driver to do, if they give a warning about vehicles passing from behind that can only be a good thing, potentially avoiding accidents, which could only be described as an advantage?

To be fair JLR has to make statements like this otherwise it would leave itself open to litigation on a regular basis, it is of course their disclaimer.

In a perfect world things like this would not be needed, its not and anything to reduce accidents imho should be welcome.

"keep an eye on your mirrors" you say, i agree, but it would be worth it for the ones you don't see.
Btw, would you describe the ACC/forward assist as a waste of money? after all its a similar thing just for behind, the acc imho is great once you have got used to it, get a bit to close to the car in front, it brakes to maintain the distance set, great, but an audible warning for the same thing would run a close second and be just as good, is not blind spot more or less the same thing, a warning? 2011 4.4 tdv8 autobiography black

I was referring to your question regarding retrofitting.... if they were fitted then yes I can see a 'nice to have' feature

Cheers Thumbs Up

I agree it would be a nice to have feature. But you could try moving your side mirrors out more. Someone pointed this out to me, that you don’t really need to see the side of your car in the mirror. ______________________________

Was on my car when I bought it and doubt if I would miss it.

My car spends most of its time towing and it is switched off when hooked up, useful if I forget to plug in as soon as I move it detects the caravan.

Mine doesn't get activated by my caravan although the van is no wider than the car. However it is activated by roadside bushes on my not-so-wide lane. It has not activated in traffic that I know of but there's not much traffic in rural areas.

I retrofitted ACC for freeway travelling, not for start-stop traffic and whilst I keep forward alert activated, I do so in case it helps by pre-arming the brakes if a kangaroo jumps into my path at night. I find that forward alert is overly cautious in warning of vehicles that have slowed to turn-off, even on its shortest setting, considering that the vehicle is directly ahead in full view.

Mark,

I'd retrofit it too, just because I could.....

I'm also thinking surround cameras, maybe, one day !!

I have it and it's a good additional sentinal.
You could argue all modern safety systems are not "necessary".
But I'll take the car with the airbags, auto braking, and anything else they want to invent. Cheers, Greg

i could see it as being useful even if it never gets used in anger so to speak, and yes it irritates me that it hasn't got it, as does the lack of surround cameras, and powered rear seats!
so there is a small part that wants to fit it because i can.
I just wondered if anyone has retrofitted it, and to what that entailed except the obvious of course, or has anyone contemplated it and then discounted it because of costs etc.
Knowledge is king as they say.
Yes the mirrors are all the way out,
sure the car is fine "as is", i just consider it a useful addition as are other things on the car 2011 4.4 tdv8 autobiography black

Would it be worth looking first to see if the wires are fitted already as that might make up your mind if it's worth doing

The sensors could be in the side mirrors as the wiring schematic does not show any other sensors. The schematic only shows LEDs in the mirrors on a twisted pair, normally reserved for data bus usage.

Edit: It may use the rear parking sensor data as PDC also uses the MS canbus.
