Hi All,

Prey tell! What are these foam pads for?
These two, grey pads stick to the top of the inner wings housed at the rear of the engine compartment in front of the scuttle. (One on each wing top) aside the bonnet hinge.
Mine are both saturated with water, are badly split and have become unstuck from their original position.
Do I need to renew/replace these?
What purpose do they serve??
Will replacement parts also become saturated and require replacing at 3yr intervals?!
Any help would be appreciated.

If they're similar to the ones in link they reduce wind noise apparently so guru Craig says.
Although mines a 322 so may be different.

My nearside one is saturated and has just split - did anyone ever get LR part numbers? Or should I just get cracking with the glue (I'll need a lot) Geoff

Unfortunately they do become saturated over time - I tried spraying mine with silicone spray when they were dry, but that only had a temporary effect

For the pads with approximate prices:

The two pads on the top of the wing are
LH Front LR084527
RH Front LR084528
LH Rear LR115141
RH Rear LR115140
All about £14

There is also a pad above these on underside of the bonnet
LH LR116023 - £15
RH LR116024 - £37

The pads around the air vents in the bonnet
LR111065 - £15 - same part both sides.

Thanks guys, I have had a closer look this morning and the problem was the freezing weather. Yes, the pads do get saturated but if they then freeze they stick together and opening the bonnet tears the foam.

So when I went to top up the washer fluid, I opened the bonnet and tore the foam pads on the nearside as they were frozen together (offside was in the sunshine). I don't know if saturation is normal but I certainly wouldn't have had the problem if I opened to bonnet after the ice had melted. The offside ones are also saturated but as they weren't frozen no problem and I guess they'll dry out in time from the heat of the engine..

So its more of a warning or public service announcement.  Geoff

I just dried mine on a radiator, repaired them with a bit of silicon glue stuff and replaced. I also used a bit of cling film on each one to make sure they don’t freeze together.
I also tied a knot in my neck to remind me not to open the bonnet in freezing conditions. Obviously they still saturate but in normal use the heat from the engine will dry them out. I don’t actually know if new ones would saturate less or not at all, I could spend a few quid to find out - but then again.......... Geoff

read your warning post Geoff and regardless i tried to open my bonnet yesterday and guess what.....even while i was trying to open it a little Geoff's voice was nagging not to do it but i did..

and you know the result, torn rubbers, not bad but enough to consider buying new in the spring.. ... ... - .- -.

yep I did - £142 from LRdirect - the items are supposedly special order but they were delivered in 2 days
I replaced all 8 but only 6 where actually damaged
the parts numbers listed previously was really helpful, but it was difficult to workout exactly which parts went where various other LR's this one is still the best

were they difficult to replace ?

my damaged ones seem to be stuck down with kind of mastic.. ... - .- -.

Easy enough to replace, as you found they are held place with a combination of clips and double sided tape. Cleaning off the remains of the old tape is the hardest part, a solvent helps but be careful of the paintwork.

a couple of the pieces needed fettling as I think they are also made to fit the semi-skimmed various other LR's this one is still the best
